Water would appear to be the most harmless cleaning product available. Water is more plentiful and cheaper than any other cleaning solution. But in some cases, using water can cause more harm than good. Express.co.uk has compiled a list of six things you should never clean with water.
Things you should never clean with water
Velvet is a beautifully soft, fuzzy fabric.
But you should never clean these types of fabrics with water.
When the fibres on these fabrics get wet and then dry, they can remain in their new position, which means you may need to wipe the surface to put the fibres back into shape.
Hardwood and laminate flooring has a water-resistant finish, but over time this can wear off.
Cleaning these floors with water can cause damage and if water gets into the surface, it can cause the wood to swell and turn black.
Instead, you should clean the wooden floor with a cleaning solution and a microfibre cloth.
You shouldn’t mix electricity and water.
Instead, when cleaning electronics, you should dry dust electronics only.
If there is something on electronics which you cannot clean off, you should try slightly dampening your cleaning cloth.
Never spray a cleaning solution straight onto the electronics.

You should never try to clean your tarnished silver with water because it will cause them to tarnish further.
Instead, you should make sure to use silver polish.
You can also use ketchup to get rid of tarnish on silverware.
For this cleaning solution, allow your silver to soak in ketchup for five to 10 minutes before rinsing it off with water and buff it with a cloth.
You should never clean gas stove tops with water.
Gas igniters are very sensitive to water and if they get wet they will not turn on when you try to use them.
Instead, the igniter will keep clicking but no flame will be ignited.
For the same reason, you should also never spray a cleaning solution directly onto your gas stovetop.
Silk is a difficult fabric to clean at home because it is so delicate.
To successfully clean silk items, however, you should make sure to never use water.
Instead, it’s best to take silk items to a dry cleaner to wash.
