FIVE first thoughts after the draw
1 – Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will be disappointed after winning their respective groups. Napoli still pack a punch with Victor Osimhen in attack, while Inter’s confidence in the knockouts will have grown significantly following last season’s final appearance.
2 – PSG escaped a potential last 16 nighmare by drawing Real Sociedad, who don’t have the star power compared to other group winners this year. Although Sociedad can’t be underestimated, they’re sixth in LaLiga and will be up against it when Kylian Mbappe and Co come to the Basque country.
3 – PSV vs Dortmund could provide the best entertainment across the last 16. The German side impressed in an incredibly difficult group while PSV have won all 16 games in the Dutch top flight this year. Although Dortmund will have the edge, don’t expect it to be a walkover.
4 – Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid remain strong favourites to win it all after three favourable draws in the last 16. Nothing’s a given in the knockout stages, but it should be fairly routine for the European juggernauts against Copenhagen, Lazio and Leipzig.
5 – If everything goes according to the script, we could be graced with just English, German and Spanish teams in the quarter-final. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid knocking out Inter and Napoli would do England a massive favour in terms of their coeffecient ranking.
City and Arsenal get solid draws
Both English clubs will be pleased with their draws heading into the last 16, with the champions in particular set to play this year’s surprise package in Copenhagen.
Porto present more of a challenge for Mikel Arteta’s side having picked up 12 points in the group stage, but haven’t shown inconsistency in the Portuguese top flight so far this term.
The Premier League clubs will be pleased to have missed out on draws against Serie A champions Napoli and last season’s finallists Inter.
