Follow Mail Sport’s live blog for the latest score, team news and updates as Everton host Manchester United at Goodison Park as the Toffees return to Premier League action for the first time since their points deduction.

'We're willing to take it on' – Dyche

Sean Dyche has spoken on the siege atmosphere around the football club following Everton’s points deduction: ‘I think it’s creating itself. I don’t think we’re doing anything with it. The news and what it was has seen the Toffees get behind the team.

‘I think that’s a relevant part of it but we’re willing to come together and take it on.

Speaking on the passion of Everton fans, he added: ‘The fans are always here in numbers and they’ve been right with us. I think that’s important and the players have been paying that back this year with some great performances and getting points on the board.

‘I think there’s a good connection and I think that’s important.’

Erik ten Hag has warned Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford to ‘step up’

Man United have struggled to find the back of the net so far this season having scored 13 goals this season.

Comparatively, West Ham who sit below them coming into this match have scored 23, while Brighton, a place a head of them, have 28.

Marcus Rashford is their only forward to have scored in the league this season, with one goal to his name, with Rasmus Hojlund still looking for his first Premier League goal in a United shirt.

While Ten Hag admitted he was ‘confident’ that his strikers were able to score goals, he added: ‘’They have to step up, they know that. You have to deal with that with the pressure and the standards of Man United, but our players have the abilities to score goals.’

IAN HERBERT: The goalposts moved in Everton's case…that's why punishment is so unfair

Many have raised their concerns over Everton’s harsh 10-point deduction after they breached profit and sustainability rules.

The Toffees’ have claimed that they will appeal the Premier League’s decision to dock them points, with Sean Dyche calling it ‘unjust’.

Defiant Dyche says his players are ready to fight

Sean Dyche has admitted that Everton were shocked to receive their 10-point penalty by the Premier League after the club breached profit and sustainability rules, but has added that the team will continue to build ‘positive momentum’.

In his pre-match programme letter to fans of the club, Dyche wrote: ‘It’s fair to say we were all shocked – the Club, Evertonians, and I believe the world of football – at the decision to deduct us 10 points in the Premier League during the international break.

‘As you know, we immediately announced our intention to appeal that outcome and on that side of things, there is nothing more we can do until that process takes place.

‘In the meantime, something we can control is how everyone who cares deeply about Everton Football Club pulls together once again – as players, staff and supporters.’

Dyche added that his team are growing in ‘resilience’ amid their adverse situation.

‘The goal for us doesn’t change. We have to win football matches,’ he wrote.

‘I said when I became manager that we have to learn to win and do so in different ways. Our 3-2 victory at Crystal Palace last time out was a brilliant example of that.

‘I know we can play better than we did at Selhurst Park. We can deal with the ball better, particularly looking at the second half, but the resilience and teamsmanship is growing all the time.’

Is this United's Goodison farewell?

If this does prove to be United’s visit to Goodison – they could still be drawn away to Everton in the FA Cup – they will be hoping to sign off with a win at a ground that has delivered joy and despair for them in equal measure.

United won the league at Goodison in 2003 and effectively sealed the title four years later, but were hammered 4-0 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019.

In the last 10 years, Everton have won four times at home against United in all competitions, with two draws and six wins for the visitors.

What does the points deduction mean for Everton?

Everton, or more precisely their 10-point deduction, will be the centre of attention on Merseyside this afternoon.

The deduction has plunged Everton down to 19th place on four points, five adrift of safety after Luton beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday.

A sad day for English football

Before we focus onto matters at Goodison, today is a sad day for English football after the late Terry Venables died earlier this morning aged 80.

Preamble

And so onto Goodison Park then, which expected to be an even angrier venue than usual this afternoon.

For once, however, Evertonians will not be aiming their vitriol at their players, referees or the club’s board but at the Premier League.

Everton were plunged to 19th on the table last week, after the Premier League deducted for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

The club were left stunned by the decision and plan to launch an immediate appeal, while supporters will get their first chance to vent their indignation on the pitch this afternoon.

Supporters group The 1878s will hand out ‘Premier League corrupt’ placards outside the ground for their match against United, plus banners and flags.

Among all that, United arrive on Merseyside for what could be their last visit to Goodison Park with team decimated by injuries.

Everton is the first stop on a crucial three-game trip for United, which will take them to Istanbul to face Galatasaray on Wednesday for a pivotal Champions League clash and then to Newcastle on Saturday.
