Former England star claimed ex-manager used loophole to help him cheat drugs test | The Sun

FORMER England star Carlton Palmer used a physio's wee to make it through a drugs test.

That's after smoking cannabis before a match.


Palmer turned to ex-manager Ron Atkinson after being asked to provide a sample by drugs testers.

And luckily for the former midfielder, who had puffed a joint earlier in the week, a physio was on hand to provide a urine sample on his behalf.

Palmer told The Owl Sanctuary: “It’s what I used to smoke. I like a spliff.

“I got drug-tested the week before and you normally don’t get drug-tested two games on the trot.

"So we’re playing Crystal Palace — on the Thursday night I’m on the f***ing wacky baccy — and then Ron says, ‘You’re up again’.

“I said, ‘Gaffer, I need a word’. So we had to get the physio to p**s in a bottle and pass it through.”

Palmer says the incident occurred during the 1989/1990 campaign.

Indeed, during Palmer's time at Sheffield Wednesday, fans used to chant: “We’ve got Carlton Palmer; he smokes marijuana …”

Palmer won 18 caps for the Three Lions.

In 2016 he had a health scare and needed a five-hour heart op.

But Big Ron claims he does not remember the incident, despite signing Palmer for THREE different clubs.

Atkinson said: “I don’t know anything about it. He was a very good player — much better than he was ever given credit for.”
