ENGLAND legend Alan Shearer has admitted that he nearly threw away Diego Simeone's shirt from the infamous 1998 World Cup clash with Argentina.

Shearer, now 53, started the France '98 round-of-16 match which infamously saw David Beckham get sent of for kicking out at Simeone.


He scored England's first goal of the match, but the Three Lions went on to lose on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

The former Newcastle striker has since revealed that he got Simeone's shirt at full-time.

But he almost threw it away when having a clear-out of his house.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer said: "I've actually got Simeone's shirt from that game.

"I was moving house a couple of years ago and I said to my son, 'I don't know what's in the loft but I can't get up there now, you're going to have to go up there for me', and he came down with two black bin bags full of old tops.

"I said, 'I'm just going to chuck them', because I was frustrated, 'just chuck them in a skip, I don't want them'. But he said, 'you can't chuck them out dad!'

"He went through them all and Simeone's top was in there and he's got that now.

"In the current climate he's probably sat on an absolute fortune, the way tops are selling nowadays.

"I might ask for it back off of him now!"

Following the match, Simeone admitted that he over-reacted to Beckham's kick to get him sent off.

Beckham opened up about the aftermath of the incident, which saw him face abuse from fans, in his new Netflix documentary series.

He said: "What I went through was so extreme. The whole country hated me. Hated me.

"It changed my life. I felt very vulnerable and alone. Wherever I went I got abuse every single day.

"People look at you in a certain way, spit at you, abuse you, come up to your face and say some of the things that they said. That was difficult."
