Tributes have begun to flood in following the passing of Lady Cathy Ferguson on Thursday.
Ferguson, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex’s wife, passed away aged 84 with the news confirmed in a statement from the Ferguson family.
It read: ‘We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.’
Sir Alex and Lady Cathy married in 1966, meaning the two were husband and wife for 57 years, including throughout the former’s 27 years in charge of United.
Others in and out of the footballing world paid tribute to Lady Cathy on social media, including several clubs and footballing stars.

‘My Heart goes out to Sir Alex on the passing of his wife Lady Cathy Ferguson,’ said TV presenter Eammon Holmes. ‘We have shared Many Happy social gatherings over the years. He was called The Boss but believe me she was The Boss. Heartbreaking for him and their whole extended family . My sympathies #RIPCathy.’
Dan Walker, meanwhile, said: ‘Very sorry to hear this. Cathy was his rock for many years. Sending love to Sir Alex and the rest of the family.’
Several football clubs have also posted their support for the former Red Devils boss, including rivals Manchester City, who wrote: ‘Everyone at Manchester City sends their condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family at this very difficult time.’
Sir Alex’s former club Aberdeen, meanwhile, posted: ‘Everyone at Aberdeen FC sends their deepest condolences to Sir Alex and the Ferguson family at this very sad time.’
One of his former clubs as a player, Rangers, said: ‘Everyone at #RangersFC sends their deepest condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family at this time.’
One of the Fergusons’ sons, Darren, is currently manager of Peterborough United.
His side are due to face Lincoln City at home on Saturday. There has been no word on if their manager will be in the dugout, but the club posted on X: ‘Everyone at Peterborough United Football Club offers our sincere condolences to Darren Ferguson and his family on the passing of his beloved mother, Lady Cathy.

Manchester United’s women’s team were in action on Friday night against Arsenal and all players wore black armbands as a mark of respect towards Ferguson.
The club said in a statement: ‘Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.’
