DONNY VAN DE BEEK rejected a loan transfer to Newcastle because he did not fancy a relegation battle, according to reports.
The £39million Manchester United midfielder continues to be outcasted at Old Trafford.
He has featured for just 380 minutes for the Red Devils all season.
Seven of those come from three substitute appearances in the Premier League under Ralf Rangnick.
The Dutchman, 24, looks set to need to move away to resurrect his career.
But according to The Telegraph, he turned down the chance to move to St James' Park.
It is thought the Toon made contact with Van de Beek's representatives over a potential deal.
But he was unwilling to spend the second half of the season scrapping to avoid the drop.

Also, United insist they do not want to lose any more of their senior players from the squad still competing on three fronts.
Rangnick told the media on Friday: “I want Donny van de Beek to stay.
"I had a conversation with him two weeks ago and told him I would advise him to stay until the end of the season.
"With the World Cup coming up in the winter, he wants to play.”
Van de Beek has also been linked with temporary switches to Borussia Dortmund and Everton but may end up staying put after all.
The report adds Newcastle are likely to have the same response when they contact Gini Wijnaldum over a return to the club on loan.
