Man Utd plot January transfer for Adrien Rabiot to bolster midfield but face competition from Premier League rivals | The Sun

MANCHESTER UNITED and Newcastle are both battling it out to sign Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a swoop for the Frenchman since last summer.

Erik ten Hag allegedly launched another attempt to sign him in June, but talks collapsed shortly before he signed a one-year contract extension with Juventus.

United are now eyeing a potential January deal, but they face competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Magpies want to sign Rabiot as part of their efforts to strengthen their presence in Europe.

However, Massimiliano Allegri wants to tie him down to a new contract.

Rabiot, 28, joined Juventus in a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 and has since made 181 appearances.

The midfielder scored 11 goals and provided six assists last season after experiencing a resurgence under Allegri.

And he believes he should've received a Ballon d'Or nomination for his efforts.

He told L'Equipe: "I can’t deny that it hurts because I had an important season.

"Then, seeing some other names, I think it was not logical. Sometimes two good Champions League games are enough, but those deciding do not consider the entire season."

Man Utd boss Ten Hag spent over £180million this summer in a bid to improve his squad.

Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and Jonny Evans all signed permanent deals before deadline day, while Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat joined on loan.

However, the Red Devils have endured a poor start to the season with three wins and three defeats in six games.
