West Ham's stunning European record punctured

Meanwhile, if you’re a West Ham fan, you’ll be looking to your side to get back on the right track after a few tricky results.

There was a bitter pill to swallow in midweek as Olympiacos ended West Ham’s 17-game unbeaten streak in Europe. Olympiacos themselves had been struggling for wins in Europe in recent seasons.

That defeat came on the back of a 4-1 loss at Aston Villa, where the Hammers were well and truly bulldozed over, so they’ll see this game against weakened prey as a perfect match to get back in the win column.

The news overshadowing today's clash

It’s hard to look past a foreboding context looming over this match if you’re an Everton fan.

The Premier League are pushing to impose a sizeable points deduction on Everton if they are found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules back in 2021-22.

The club’s case is currently being heard by an independent commission after they posted staggering financial losses of almost £372million over a three-year period, more than £250m above what the Premier League’s guidelines permits.

It could see them have 12 points docked, which would leave them on minus five points – hardly a great situation to be in.

Hello and welcome

Good morning and welcome to Mail Sport’s live blog as West Ham host Everton.

We’re set for an unusual 1pm kick-off today as the match has been pushed forward an hour to make room for the Manchester United vs Manchester City game, which is on at 3.30pm after Sky, the clubs, and local authorities agreed to it.

And what an interesting game this should be! West Ham are winless in three games while Everton have won three of their last five, so despite their differences in the table it could be a closer game than one would think. Or not. Who knows?
