Couple off cheeky £174k for a £250k property on A Place in the Sun
A Place In the Sun house hunters Malcom and Annette had viewers up in arms when they made an offer on a property in Almeria in South-East Spain, which was promptly branded “embarrassing”.
Presenter Leah Charles-King admitted that it was a tricky search for the couple, as they had a lot on their wishlist, including space for their cats, motorbikes and campervan.
However they settled on a stunning Stone House in Bédar, which was on the market for £215,746 at the time of filming. The retired couple’s budget was £200,000 but they decided to make a “cheeky” offer to the vendor to test the waters.
“My initial cheeky thought was £175,000 and it’s a very cheeky offer but I feel in that sort of mood this morning,” Annette told Leah.
When Leah enquired about the reason for the lower offer, Malcom explained: “We feel that both the heating system for the hot water and the plunge pool are getting towards the end of their lives, and we would like to put in a little storage area for bikes.”

Viewers were not amused by this reasoning and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to make their feelings known.
A user called @BrightonTina7 commented: “#aplaceinthesun That’s an embarrassing offer, I’m a bit appalled!”
@soniascs46 concurred writing: “These two are embarrassing themselves #aplaceinthesun.” (sic)
@chuckles33 waded in: “#aplaceinthesun again…. why do they always expect the vendor to pay for their upgrade works??” (sic)
Meanwhile @1957RAB observed: “A standard ‘we want the sellers to fund our improvements’ then #aplaceinthesun.”

Unsurprisingly, the initial offer was rejected and the vendor countered by asking for £205,000.
However Annette and Malcom were still fixated on lowballing and offered £190,000, which was still over £25,000 below the asking price.
Eventually, the owners agreed to a sale for £200,000 to include all the furniture. When Leah enquired if they were happy with that Annette grinned: “Of course I am!”
Following the negotiation drama, @jonesgez1 commented on X: “People don’t half get their draws in a twist on here when it comes to negotiation. This isn’t an overpriced box in Uk. Property attitude and “market” is completely diff on the continent. They did my head in but they got the property because the seller said yes. #aplaceinthesun.” (sic)
