BBCs Sally Nugent on reason for Strictly U-turn after marriage split

Strictly: Sally Nugent details training for Christmas special

One of the well-known faces taking part in the festive fun on the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special is BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent. When asked what made her want to take part, the BBC star said: “It was all about timing. I’ve always been too scared to even think about Strictly.

“It’s always been one of those things where lots of people who do my job do it and I’ve always run in the other direction. But you know what, I just thought it was time to do something joyful and fun and happy.

“Escape from the real world for a little bit and go into this bubble of glitter, and sequins and happiness and giddiness,” Her decision to say yes to the Christmas special comes after her reported split from her husband of 13 years Gavin Hawthorn.

Earlier this year, it was claimed by MailOnline that the pair had decided to call it a day on their relationship as they were “moving in different directions”. At the time, the insider alleged: “It’s very sad but they are no longer together.

“I think they tried to tough it out for quite a while as they didn’t want to split up if they could possibly help it for the sake of their son but they clearly couldn’t make a go of it.”

Despite the reported split, that hasn’t seemed to put a dampener on her festive spirit as she spoke more about appearing on the Strictly special.

She added: “I just loved the idea of doing Christmas because it felt like everybody is going to be happy, there’s no pressure, it doesn’t feel like it’s a competition to me.

“It feels like it’s a chance to have a laugh, and spread a little joy on my favourite day. It’s one of my favourite shows to watch on Christmas day anyway, so to be in it is incredible.

As the usual ballroom is transformed into a magical winter wonderland, each star taking part will be matched with a professional partner from the regular show.

In their couple, they’ll have to try and dazzle judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Judge Shirley Ballas in a bid to raise the silver star trophy.

Sally will take to the dancefloor with Graziano Di Prima as they tackle a Christmas Foxtrot.

Also taking part this year in the special is EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick who has been matched with Nancy Xu.

Joining the two stars is broadcaster Dan Snow who will dance with Nadiya Bychkova.

Tillie Amartey has been paired with Neil Jones, Danny Cipriani will be dancing with Jowita and Keisha Bunchanan’s professional partner is Gorka Marquez.

The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special will air on Christmas Day at 4.40pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
