Below Deck Mediterranean, much like the original series, mostly welcomes an entirely new cast onboard every season but there are some who make a comeback. One of which was deckhand Nico Scholly who starred in both series four and five. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about why he decided to change career paths.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Below Deck Mediterranean.
Nico was first introduced in season four of Below Deck Mediterranean where he was both a hard-working and a charming member of staff.
The real drama kicked in when he came back for series five as the lead deckhand and he had an argument with temporary bosun EJ Jansen.
He also broke up with his long-term girlfriend Melissa so he could pursue a romance with crew member Brianna Adekeye.
They seemed to be going strong for most of the season but in the end, Nico broke things off with Brianna as he realised that he wanted to be back with Melissa.
Why did Nico Scholly leave yachting?
During the season five reunion, Nico showed remorse for his actions, apologising for how he behaved.
Prior to returning to the show, Nico had lost his brother Tristen who was killed after falling from a third-floor balcony following a night of drinking.
He reportedly admitted later that his time on the boat was a “sort of escape from dealing with reality”.
Nico went on to explain to Life After Bravo about his decision to leave the world of yachting altogether.

“It was just starting to get a little bit too much,” he explained.
“I kind of ended in a rough way with the season.
“I still have a passion for it…I think the furthest step I’d go to going back would be owning my own little boat and renting it out, maybe, to people, but mostly for pleasure.”
The 28-year-old has ventured into an entirely new career since the series ended.

What is Nico Scholly’s job now?
Nico returned to his hometown of Chicago and joined the family plumbing business which does both residential and commercial work in the city.
This isn’t the only thing that now occupies Nico’s time after leaving the yachting world behind.
Nico and his family have created a foundation in memory of his late brother.
The Tristen Scott Foundation NFP aims to “bring awareness to the importance of being an organ donor and to not forget the heroes’ families, who are left with nothing but memories during their tragic loss”, according to its website.
Nico also has a new love in his life, following his romances with Melissa and Brianna.
He has been with his current girlfriend, who is coincidentally called Brianna as well, for more than two years.
They met through mutual friends and quarantined together during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Below Deck Mediterranean season 7 will premiere on Bravo in 2022.
