Former EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison has withdrawn from her role in theatre show Mum’s The Word ahead of its opening.
The actress, who played Heather Trott on the BBC One soap, was due to take on the role of Alison in the 28-date comedy sketch show, which explores theme of motherhood and will stop at various theatres across the UK.
Cheryl, however, decided to withdraw from the tour ‘due to personal reasons’, bravely putting her mental health first during a tough time for the star, with another former EastEnders icon set to step in.
A spokesperson for Red Entertainment, producers of Mum’s The Word, told Metro.co.uk:’ Cheryl has unfortunately had to withdraw from the tour due to personal reasons and we can all agree that she should be putting herself and her health first.
‘We are delighted that Cheryl’s EastEnders co-star, Laurie Brett will be stepping in to the role and joining the cast of Mums The Word on their UK tour.’
Discussing her reasons for withdrawing, Cheryl stated that she needs to be around her family right now.
‘There is nothing that I love more than connecting with a live audience and this is something that I have never had to do in the past,’ she said.
‘But I’ve had an awful lot going on lately and I need to be fully around for my wonderful family. The Producers of the show have been absolutely brilliant and I would like to thank them very sincerely for all of their understanding.
The confirmation of her departure comes after sources told The Mirror that Cheryl had a ‘breakdown’ and quit the show, adding that the producers are ‘doing their best’ to support her.
Sending our love, Cheryl.
As noted above, Laurie, who played Jane Beale in EastEnders, will step into the role of Alison. ‘I am excited to be joining Mum’s The Word sharing the comedy of the rollercoaster ride that is Motherhood to parents around the country,’ she said. ‘
I fully support Cheryl’s decision and I am looking forward to bringing my version of Alison to the tour’.
