Coronation Street’s Sue Cleaver is set to join an all-star cast on a new series of BBC reality show Pilgrimage, according to reports.
The 60 year old actress is said to be taking time away from the ITV soap to appear on the BBC2 show – although she has no plans to leave permanently. Sue has played much-loved cobbles character Eileen Grimshaw since 2000.
It is not the first time that Sue has stepped away from soap. She starred in 2022’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and fans were left shocked when she was the third contestant to be voted off.
Pilgrimage is a religious reality show that sees celebrities of different faiths and beliefs come together for a trek along an ancient pilgrimage route. According to The Sun, Sue will appear on the programme alongside famous faces including Christine McGuinness – who in recent years has opened up about her autism diagnosis at the age of 33.
A source told the outlet how Pilgrimage had come at a “perfect time” for Christine as she starts to “shrug off” the heartbreak from the breakdown of her marriage to Paddy McGuinness and begins to explore the possibility of “finding new love”.
"Traditionally, pilgrimages were taken to explore personal growth towards a place of spiritual awakening and the BBC Two programme has shown to profoundly affect its cast," the insider added. "Not only could the experience prove to be incredibly positive for Christine’s own development, bosses hope her journey will add real heart to the programme.
"Any revelations about Paddy or her current love life would, of course, go down a treat, too."
Sue and Christine will be joined by five more celebrities who have not yet been announced. Cobbles star Sue has been in the news lately as a result of her weight loss that saw her go from a size 16 to a size 12.
And last month she was left "absolutely incensed" after an online scammer used her image to promote their weight loss supplement. In a video shared to her Instagram, she said: “I’m really, really sad that I have to actually make this video. But, I’ve had quite a lot of messages over the last couple of weeks asking me about… keto dummies.”
She continued: “There is obviously some scam going around saying that I lost weight using keto gummies. Dummies? I dunno. Well, it’s c**p. It’s a scam. And if you’ve been taken in by it, I am so, so sorry.”
Sue fumed about her anger that scammers had used her image to promote their products, as she said: “It’s outrageous. And I just want you to know that I would never, ever, ever advocate anything like that. I’m incensed. I’m absolutely incensed.
She went on: "Yes, I lost some weight last year. I stopped drinking and I went in the jungle. Yes, I have lost weight this year. But not from any diet."
