Michael Owen's appearance on Deal or No Deal's Christmas special has left fans rather confused, as they question what the former footballer has to do with the festive season.
As the Christmas special of the recently-returned gameshow aired on ITV, viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts on the show, and former Liverpool and England footballer Michael's participation.
One viewer asked: "What’s Michael Owen got to do with Christmas [shrug emoji] #DealOrNoDeal"
"What’s the point of a celebrity version of this? Someone like Michael Owen can afford to donate a £100,000 to charity himself, what if he’s got 50p in his box bit embarrassing #dealornodeal" argued another.
While a third complaied: ""Of all the people thay *could* have chosen for Celebrity #DealOrNoDeal, they've gone for Michael f***ing Owen…"
And a fourth added: "How did the producers of ‘Deal or No Deal’ looks for a charismatic footballer for their Christmas special and end up with Michael Owen! Razor Ruddock would have been a miles better choice #dealornodeal"
Another viewer questioned why the episode was airing a week before Christmas, as they wrote: "I’m surprised this is on a week early, it’s not even Christmas yet. #DealOrNoDeal".
Michael brought along some of his friends and family, including wife Louise and eldest daughter Gemma, who appeared on Love Island in 2022.
It comes after Michael opened up to OK! about his thoughts on daughter Gemma's stint on Love Island.
He told us: "I wasn’t that keen but I knew as soon as she said, ‘You know what, I’m probably favouring doing it,’ that she wouldn’t bring shame to me or the family, or anything like that, as she’s bombproof.
"She was the youngest on there, but I thought she was the most mature out of all of them. She was always there to talk to other people, and I think she did really well.
"It’s not the easiest thing to go away from your family for such a long time and behave like she did."
Opening up further about his family life, Michael revealed that his wife has no interest in football and has "never put him on a pedestal."
Michael and Louise have known each other their entire lives and even attended the same nursery and primary school and lived 10 doors apart.
Discussing this, Michael said: "We’ve known each other for more than 40 years, and once I got back from the FA’s Centre of Excellence in Lilleshall aged 17 and we got together properly, this is the only life we’ve ever known, so she’s never put me on a pedestal.
"The truth is she doesn’t really give a monkey’s about football and she’s never really understood it all."
