Death in Paradise gets new spin-off series with female detective as lead

Ralf Little shares an update on Death in Paradise

BBC have confirmed a second Death in Paradise spin-off series is in the works with filming beginning next year.

The six-part series, titled Return to Paradise, will be set in the beachside hamlet of Dolphin Cove in Australia.

It’s set to follow “golden girl” Mackenzie Clarke who is forced to leave her life as a London Metropolitan police officer.

Mackenzie is described as having an intuitive approach to detective work and has managed to build a reputation for herself for being able to crack impossible cases.

Despite leaving her hometown six years ago, she’s suddenly forced to return after vowing she’d never go back.

With unfinished business and unanswered questions, Mackenzie isn’t a fan of Dolphin Cove upon her return, with the same feeling being reciprocated by the residents.

A series overview reads: “When a murder takes place in Dolphin Cove, Mack can’t help but put her inspired detective brilliance to good use and determines, despite her reservations, that she needs to make the best of it.

“Including tying up the loose ends with the man she left at the altar six years ago.”

Although there’s no official release date for the series, BBC have revealed filming will start next year.

Speaking about the upcoming series, Sue Deeks, the Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, said: “Everything we all love about Death in Paradise, the humour, the beautiful scenery, the likeable characters, the ingenious plots – now in a fabulous Australian setting.

“I cannot wait for BBC viewers to be introduced to Detective Mack and the good (and not so good!) folk of Dolphin Cove. What a treat we have in store!”

The new spin-off comes following the success of Beyond Paradise which launched earlier this year.

Fans were thrilled as Kris Marshall reprised his role as DI Humphrey Goodman which followed his move from the Caribbean to Devon with Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton).

Death in Paradise bosses Tony Jordan and Tim Key have teased the prospect of more spin-offs in the future.

Tony told Digital Spy: “You have to say, ‘You know what? There’s a show here – there’s something really cool here’.

“We take this one ingredient, we plant it and we’ve got something completely different.

“It’s of the same genre and the same universe, but it’s another part of the forest and I’m fascinated by that.”

Return to Paradise will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
