Jonny Labey won the hearts of EastEnders fans when his character Paul Coker and Ben Mitchell (played by Harry Reid at the time) fell in love.
Sadly, the relationship ended in tragedy when Paul, the grandson of Les and Pam Coker (Roger Sloman and Lin Blakley) was killed in a homophobic attack at the age of just 20. His death left partner Ben devastated and is something that still his character to this day.
After Jonny left the soap after just over a year it wasn’t long before he revealed that his talents extended into areas other than acting. He won the UK talent show Dance Dance Dance, impressing judges including Ashley Banjo with his mastery of various dancing styles. In the final he beat Hollyoaks and Coronation Street star Lucy-Jo Hudson to the top spot.
He then showcased his vocal skills on The X Factor: Celebrity in 2019 but only managed tenth place in the competition.
His dreams of making it as a singer are still very much at the top of his agenda, however, and he recently unveiled his new single Keeps Me Up.
Posting a video on Instagram of the intro to the song he wrote, ’KEEPS ME UP with @kingkhamelion. First registered track of a 3 year journey which is now all coming your way! COMMENT 👆 IF YOU WANT THE WHOLE VIDEO. Dropping 11/08 with a link to PRE-SAVE.’
Last year Jonny revealed that his future as a singer had been thrown into doubt when he suffered from the physical effects of an old injury.
‘Yesterday I had my first Vocal Rehabilitation session and was told I’ve got something with a fancy name “Muscle Tension Dysphomia” following on from a headlock injury whilst I was in Thailand by some drunk idiot!’ he posted on Instagram.
‘It’s been unbelievably tough as it’s cost a fortune, whilst jobs have cancelled and all plans to release music this year jeopardised which have all taking a real toll on my mental health. But mainly my love of singing and how I had it as an extension of me. Since X Factor I promised myself to put my life and story into music.’
As he shared a video of new music he said he was grateful that the treatment had worked and he was able to pursue his dream again.
‘I really didnt realise how much I took for granted, and that taking those things away HITS. Use what you have, and chase everything that you love that makes you feel good. PLEASE. NOW!
Here’s a piece of me, hope you like it ❤’ he said.
Acting, dancing, singing – Jonny Labey is a multi-talented man. But as if that wasn’t enough, he’s also taking the leap into writing and directing films.
Again on Instagram alongside a picture of himself on the phone, he wrote: ‘Directors have hats and make important phone calls… I’m ordering snacks. I’ve finally finished writing my first short film!! We All Scream is based on my own true moment in life and with your help will be my first leap as a director!’
Jonny – who recently confirmed his romance with Hollywood actress Hannah Amin – plans to raise funds for this venture with a GoFundMe page which describes We All Scream as ‘a short story about the important things in life; connection, mental health and ice cream!’.
