Emmerdale ‘rocked by race probe including two leading soap stars’

Two of Emmerdale's leading soap stars are involved in a race probe after it was alleged that a mixed-race actress was upset by a comment on set, and her accent was mimicked.

Actors Matthew Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe, and his co-star Isabel Hodgins, who plays Victoria Sugden in the ITV soap, have been absent from filming since September after reports of a heated row on set.

The pair are facing claims that the mixed-race actress' accent was mocked, according to The Sun. However, they have categorically denied all the allegations and have claimed that there has been a misunderstanding.

A representative for Matthew, 41, and Isabel, 27, has told OK! Online: "While we would never comment on individual cases, Emmerdale has robust policies in place to deal with any allegations brought to our attention and take the appropriate steps."

Earlier this month, it was reported that Matthew and Isabel had rowed with their co-star Aaron Anthony over their alleged comments about the actress' accent.

A source told The Sun: "We have been told that Aaron brought this up with Matthew subsequently and that there was a tense conversation between them. Matthew and Isabel stopped filming afterwards."

"Emotions have been running high on set ever since, but no one knows what to believe.

"This issue is far from resolved, and while the claims are looked into, it is not clear when Matthew and Isabel will be back on set."

It was added that the issue has "presented a real challenge" for scriptwriters who have had to "change upcoming scripts involving David and Victoria".

The female cast member involved is still "filming as normal" but "wishes that she wasn't entangled in it."

Fans of the ITV soap have been questioning where Matthew and Isabel have been following the big waterfall stunt.

Both Matthew and Isabel have not been formally suspended by show bosses, but they have not filmed scenes since September.

Their characters last appeared on-screen on Thursday 28 October.

Despite the reported row, Matthew and Isabel took to Instagram by sharing a friendly snap.

Matthew's wife, Charley Webb, posted a sweet snap of her husband and Isabel joking around as she captioned it with: "The most annoying humans."
