Loose Women: Matthew Wolfenden tears up over leaving Emmerdale
Emmerdale’s Sammy Winward is returning to ITV screens after she decided to step away from the limelight eight years ago.
Sammy was an ITV household name when she played the role of Katie Sugden on Emmerdale and began on the soap in 2001.
She was involved in a host of different storylines including miscarriage, affairs and car crashes, before dramatically leaving the soap in 2015.
Katie was tracked down by Andy Sugden’s (Kelvin Fletcher) brother Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), who she discovered was secretly having an affair of his own with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).
During a heated confrontation, the floor on which Katie was standing on collapsed, leaving the character to fall to her death.

Aaron was horrified to find the body and Robert told him that Katie’s death had been an accident, but convinced Aaron to help him cover up what happened.
Andy later came to the farm to look for Katie and found her body, with the funeral taking place on 19th February 2015.
After she left the soap, Sammy decided to make one more TV appearance on the crime thriller series Prey, taking on the role of Lucy Murdoch.
However, after a small number of stints, Sammy said goodbye to the acting career and swapped a TV set for a classroom.
She previously opened up about wanting to change careers and why she thought teaching was the path to go down.

Sammy told the Daily Star: “My aim is to pass on knowledge gained from my experiences to the next generation of budding actors who would like a career in acting.”
Eight years later she is set to return to the entertainment industry and will feature in ITV crime series The Long Shadow.
The show look at the the murder of 13 women by serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, also known as The Yorkshire Ripper, where Sammy will play Peter’s wife Sonia.
It follows the story of the manhunt for the murderer, who killed innocent women across the red-light districts of Yorkshire and Manchester.
The Long Shadow focuses on the innocent victims of Peter’s vile crimes, as well as the police officers who were core to catching the murderer.
The Long Shadow airs Monday from 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with the full series available on ITVX.
