Escape to the Chateau stars Angel Adoree and Dick Strawbridge recently committed to replacing the roof of their 45-bedroom chateau. However, during a recent episode of the Channel 4 show, Angel confessed she was “pretty scared” to have the dilapidated roof retiled. She warned Dick everything needed to be finished before they host an “explosion of weddings”.

With no weddings planned at the French chateau this year, Dick and Angel have committed to the biggest and “most expensive” job they’ll ever do at the chateau by replacing the whole of their 340 square foot roof.

In a recent episode, the couple took a seat to discuss the enormous project at hand which they were both anxious about.

Dick, 62, said: “I had always thought we’d be doing the roof in the down season from weddings a section at a time.”

His 43-year-old wife Angel chimed in: “I loved that plan.

“I don’t know if it’s possible to do it all, do you?”

Dick told Angel it was possible “in theory” to renovate the entire roof, but explained the weather was a key element to the works.

“I completely agree, but next year sweetheart everything has to be done because it’s going to be a wedding explosion,” Angel added.

“We’ve got so much catch up to do and I can’t be thinking about any scaffolding or anything around the edge, it all needs to be done and pristine.”

Dick, who is trained as an engineer, explained the slates on the roof “have to be brand new” and could not be secondhand quality.

“It’s a big deal, but it’s also a bit scary because, in a way, part of the charm of this place for me is that it’s a little bit dilapidated but I’ll find a way to age them somehow,” Angel admitted.

“Have I got the option at some point to go up in the cherrypicker and just spray water over them?”

A shocked Dick stated: “I think that sounds disgusting Angel. It’s like having a paddling pool of icky stuff [sprayed] over it, why would you do that?”

However, Angel said it would be like getting a brand new pair of trainers and getting them a “tiny little bit worn in”.

“I like them with a little bit of age, I like them worn around the edge,” Angel joked as she winked at her husband.

The couple agreed to disagree on making the slates looks worn in, but in the end, Angel agreed to let Dick take the lead on the project.

The 140-year-old roof was made up of 140 slates and two pepper pot towers and there were at least half a dozen holes in the roof.

Dick and Angel have previously spoken out about why replacing the roof of their home was such an important task for them to complete.

In a recent interview on This Morning, the couple explained their two children, Arthur and Dorothy, would one day inherit the property.

The couple made it clear they wanted the roof to be fixed before their children took over the chateau.

Escape to the Chateau airs Sundays at 8pm on Channel 4.
