Former Strictly Come Dancing finalist calls for mature contestant to win

Strictly: John Whaite predicts Angela Rippon success

John Whaite, who appeared on Strictly Come Dancing back in 2021, has shared who he thinks should win this year.

Earlier this month, the 2023 line-up for the long-running BBC show was revealed as fans discovered which 15 stars would be taking to the dancefloor.

From soap stars, news anchors and a Paralympic champion, viewers are in for a treat as this year’s celebrities prepare to take to the dancefloor later this Autumn.

With anticipation for the new series beginning, former finalist John Whaite spoke to Christine Lampard about who he thinks will be raising the Glitterball.

The ITV host asked: “One answer, who’s going to win Strictly this year?”

He replied: “Oooh, my money’s on Angela Rippon. It’s about damn time, a mature woman.”

Christine said: “Well we know she can dance, back in the day certainly and I can’t wait to see her, I agree with you.”

The former Strictly star added: “You never know, she may get embroiled in a Strictly curse, you never know!”

Angela will be the oldest competitor that the BBC show has seen at the age of 79.

Ahead of her debut, Angela expressed her excitement at being part of the show.

She said: “Having been a fan of Strictly since day one, and as a former presenter of Come Dancing, this will be quite an adventure for me.

“A scary one, considering I’m about to be 79. But I’m really looking forward to the challenge, and perhaps being able to learn to dance the Argentinian Tango!!”

Angela will be competing alongside former Emmerdale actor Adam Thomas, broadcaster Krishnan Guru-Murthy, comedian Eddie Kadi, TV presenter Angela Scanlon and content creator Zara McDermott.

Also starring in the series are actress Amanda Abbington, radio host Nikita Kanda, Coronation Street’s Ellie Leach, Paralympic Champion Jody Cundy, EastEnders’ Bobby Brazier and Nigel Harman, tennis player Annabel Croft and actor Les Dennis.

According to Ladbrokes, Angela and Bobby are storming ahead with odds of 7/2 to win this season.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Angela Scanlon will likely head into the upcoming series of Strictly as the most popular pick with punters to go all the way. Our traders have already slashed her odds considerably, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see her priced even shorter by the time she takes to the dancefloor.”

Strictly Come Dancing will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in autumn 2023 with further details about air date and start time to be confirmed.
