Friends reunion special filming ‘delayed again due to coronavirus’

The long-awaited Friends reunion was announced just before coronavirus began to shut down most of the world, but the ongoing pandemic has meant filming has been held back once more.

Production was initially shut down in mid-March due to the outbreak of coronavirus, with filming pushed to May ahead of the launch of HBO Max on May 27, but was postponed.

According to Deadline, filming was due to resume on August 17, but another spike in cases of the virus has meant Hollywood studios have not been able to operate as planned.

A newly rescheduled date has yet to be set, with Deadline reporting: ‘That plan was recently called off, and there is no new target date as the situation remains fluid’.

Friends fans have been waiting years to see the full cast back together again, though reports they would be filming a new episode for the reunion have been denied.

The special will instead see Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc return to the original soundstage they filmed the sitcom on, Stage 24 on the Warner Bros Studio lot, to film the special.

The one-off programme will be directed by Ben Winston, with the six stars serving as executive producers alongside show creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane.

David Schwimmer updated fans at the end of July, telling Today: ‘We have a lot of the creative aspects of the show kind of worked out.

‘It’s unscripted, but there are going to be some surprise funny bits. The real question is, “when?”

‘We’re still trying to figure that out because we want to do it when it’s safe to do so for everyone.’

He also previously told ET: ‘I can tell you that we are hoping to shoot [the reunion] in August, in mid-August, but honestly, we will do it when it’s safe.

‘There has always been a hope that a component of that reunion show will have a live audience, which makes the whole thing really tricky.

‘We are obviously not going to risk anyone’s health by doing this.’
