Amy Sherman-Palladino’s known for writing pop culture references into her TV shows. Case in point: Gilmore Girls. Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) mention books, movies, and celebrities throughout the show’s seven-season run.
Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, which features some of the most famous movie quotes ever, happens to be one film Gilmore Girls references over and over.
Lorelai gets rid of Rory’s Dean box
Rory and Dean Forester (Jared Padalecki) end their relationship on their 3-month anniversary. After the split, Rory removes all of the stuff from her house that reminds her of Dean. I
n Gilmore Girls Season 2 Episode 17: “The Breakup: Part 2,” she tells Lorelai to get rid of her “Dean box,” asking her to put it “far, far away from the house.” Lorelai responds with a Godfather reference, saying, “Hey, it sleeps with the fishes,” according to IMDb.
In reality, Lorelai doesn’t toss the box in a body of water. Instead, she puts it in the hall closet where Rory later finds it.
Rory and Lorelai bond over an iconic ‘Godfather’ scene
During Gilmore Girls Season 2 Episode 14: “It Should’ve Been Lorelai,” Rory and Lorelai discuss where they should sit at Luke’s Diner. Naturally, The Godfather comes up in the conversation.
“Or we could sit in the corner – you know, the Mafia table so that no one can come up behind you and whack you with a cannoli,” Lorelai said.
“Whack you with a cannoli? Oh, because he left the gun and took the cannoli,” Rory replied.
Lorelai tells Rory to have a ‘sit down’ with Francie
Francie Jarvis (Emily Bergl) gives Rory a hard time in Gilmore Girls Season 3. To get Francie off her case, Lorelai suggests to Rory they have a “sit down” Godfather style.
“We’ll have it in an Italian restaurant. You’ll get up, go to the bathroom – thanks – and come out shooting, and then I’ll send you to Italy,” Lorelai said, referencing the movie’s famous restaurant scene.
Rory quotes Sonny from ‘The Godfather’
Lorelai thinks she’s a shoo-in for a spot in the Festival of Living Pictures but she’s disappointed when she learns she didn’t get the role in Gilmore Girls Season 4 Episode 7: “The Festival of Living Art.” Meanwhile, Taylor Doose (Michael Winters) wants Rory to participate.
Rory tells Taylor she’ll only participate if her mom can too. According to IMDb, she quotes James Caan’s Godfather character, Sonny, when explaining the plan to Lorelai. Rory says, “Bada-bing all over his nice Ivy-League suit,” just like Sonny did in a scene from The Godfather.
Luke Danes looks to ‘The Godfather’ for family advice
Luke Danes (Scott Patterson) is upset with his brother-in-law, T.J. (Michael DeLuise), in Gilmore Girls Season 6 Episode 2: “Fight Face.” He brings up The Godfather when talking to Lorelai about how best to handle the situation.
“I’m gonna be like Michael Corleone dealing with that slimy brother-in-law of his,” Luke said, according to IMDb.
Rory describes Taylor Doose as Don Corleone
When Rory shows her boyfriend Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry) around Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls Season 7 Episode 18: “Hay Bale Maze,” Logan expresses a fascination with Taylor.
According to IMDb, in her description of him, Rory refers to Taylor as “The Mayor of Stars Hollow and Don Corleone all wrapped up into one.”
These are just a few references made to The Godfather on Gilmore Girls. There are more featured on the show and a few in the Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
