Peter Barlow has become one of Coronation Street’s most familiar faces since the soap first began, with the character gracing the cobbles on and off as far back as 1965.
Since 2000 Peter has been played by actor Chris Gascoyne, who has been at the centre of some major storylines including battling alcoholism, being wrongly convicted of the murder of Tina McIntyre, and having numerous affairs.
He’s set for some dramatic scenes in the coming weeks also, as he overhears Ryan (Ryan Prescott) having what he believes to be phone sex – leaving Daisy (Charlotte Jordan) concerned over what he’s getting himself into.
He’s also voiced his suspicions about killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) in recent weeks – with that story keeping us on the edge of our seats as it comes to a head in the forthcoming Super Soap Week.
With that in mind could Peter become Stephen’s next victim? Here’s all you need to know about his future on the soap…
Is Peter Barlow leaving Coronation Street?
Fans of the character, we’ve got some bad news for you – as Peter Barlow will indeed be departing the cobbles in the near future.
Actor Chris Gascoyne revealed to metro.co.uk earlier this year that he would be taking time out ‘in order to explore other roles’.
Having first appeared as the character in 2000, Chris’ latest stint has been across seven years since 2016.
Before that, he took extended time away from the cobbles, which is similar to the case here.
The actor said that Peter Barlow ‘is very close to his heart,’
However, it appears unlikely he is about to become a victim of Stephen Reid ahead of his long-awaited comeuppance – as a Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed that the door is ‘left open’ for the character to return.
Co-star Bill Fellows, who plays Stu Carpenter, has paid tribute to Chris in the wake of his forthcoming exit.
Speaking to The Mirror he said: ‘A very good friend of mine who I’ve had very little to do with is Chris Gascoyne but unfortunately he is leaving.
‘It’s sad but hopefully I will have a few little things with him [before he goes], but everyone is so good and so nice.’
Chris, meanwhile, already has his first post-Corrie role lined up – he’ll be treading the boards in panto, playing Captain Hook in the pantomime Peter Pan across the festive season.
The show is being staged at The Alban Arena and boasts a ‘star-studded’ cast, as well as ‘stunning sets and dazzling costumes’.
