Prince William and Kate Middleton have been raising their three children–Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Louis–in Kensington Palace where William’s mother, Diana, and his grandmother’s sister, Princess Margaret, once called home. However, there are reports that many rooms inside the palace, including Prince Louis’ nursery, are haunted.
The palace has been used as a royal residence since the 17th century and has had its fair share of tragedies and deaths occur there which is why some believe that a few spirits remain there. These are the claims about who or what may still lurk inside it today.
The claim that Prince Louis’ nursery is haunted

The claim about little Prince Louis’ nursery being haunted comes from royal biographer Andrew Morton. He is the same man who was trusted with the tapes made by the late Princess Diana, which he used in the book he wrote about her titled Diana: Her True Story In Her Own Words.
The royal nursery where the young prince sleeps within the palace’s Apartment 1A is the same one Louis’ big brother slept in as well. Following the birth of Prince George in 2013, Morton said, “Prince George’s nursery is in Apartment 1A of Kensington Palace, which has been a notorious spot for ghost sightings. The alleged ghosts of George II, Caroline of Brunswick, and Princess Sophia having reportedly been sighted in the apartment.”
Morton added that “Princess Margaret’s housekeeper told her she saw a woman in Regency dress suddenly appear in front of her, then vanish through a wall.”
The ghosts that haunt Kensington Palace

The spirit of German-born King George II is thought to haunt the palace today. He died there of an aortic aneurysm in 1760 and his ghost has reportedly been seen in various spots of the palace including in the nursery and at a window muttering to himself.
Princess Sophia, who also died at Kensington Palace in 1848, often used a spinning wheel until she went blind in her later years. It’s been said that her spinning wheel can still be heard today.
As for the woman “in Regency dress,” she was reportedly seen by a royal housekeeper known as “Mrs. Mac.” Royal biographer Chris Warwick said that the incident occurred in the 1970s. “On one occasion when she was in the entrance hall and sensed somebody looking at her,” Warwick explained. “Turning round, she clearly saw the figure of a woman in Regency dress standing in the doorway to the Drawing Room. Who was she? A Georgian Princess? A lady of the Court? There was no way of knowing because Mrs. Mac told me she was unable to see her face.”
In addition to these alleged ghosts, Princess Margaret, who resided where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s family does today, reportedly witnessed a ghost too in her presence many times. Margaret apparently saw the woman so frequently that she gave her a name dubbing her “the blue lady.”
Furthermore, a commenter on the blog Double-Barrelled Travel claimed they used to work at the palace and recalled creepy noises and strange happenings while they were employed there saying, “A lot of other things happen there such as crying babies and weird noises. Once we had a meeting with the manager [and] something tapped me on my shoulder and I felt very cold. I’ve turned around and there was no one there except a guy 4 meters away from me … I would not recommend working there to anyone, because it can seriously ruin you physically and mentally. Some people get used to it after some time but it’s too much for me but I have big respect for those people who work there at nights.”
