As another exciting night of drama got underway in Weatherfield, Coronation Street fans at home couldn’t help but notice the continued absence of Aggie Bailey, who hasn’t been seen on screen since earlier this summer.
The Bailey family matriarch, who is played by former Doctors actress Lorna Laidlaw, was last seen on our screens in June 2023 and has failed to make another appearance, even despite her son Michael having lost his job and being wrongly arrested, nor her husband having discovered the dead body of murder victim Leo Thompkins on his building site.
With things set to get worse for the family in the coming weeks with Ed’s heartbreaking gambling addiction once again having reared its head, viewers at home couldn’t help but wonder where Aggie was and why she hadn’t returned to help her family as they were clearly in need.
Taking to twitter to share their thoughts on the matter, several fans were quick to weigh in, with many having drawn attention to just how long it had been since the loveable nurse had last been spotted on the cobbles.
“Day 562 of Aggie being missing,” quipped one fan with a tongue in cheek reference to her month long absence.
A second fan also agreed as they wrote: “Which character has disappeared with no explanation? Answers on a postcard to ‘Aggie Competition, Granada TV……'"
A third fan commented: “Where is Aggie Bailey? Every time this family goes through something major she isn't around.”
A fourth fan echoed the sentiment by remarking: “Where's Aggie? When's she coming back? We need her back. One minute, she's practically running the NHS in Weatherfield, the next she's the invisible woman!”
After worrying about her whereabouts, this week fans were given a brief glimmer of hope that a return could be on the cards, as Aggie was mentioned during Tuesday’s episode when Ronnie rumbled Ed’s gambling addiction and threatened to tell his wife.
“Whaaaat?? They've just mentioned Aggie for the first time in months!!! I thought she'd gone away!” exclaimed one fan after the scenes had aired.
A second fan then added: “Ronnie can't tell Aggie because that would require Aggie to be in an episode.”
Although Aggie’s extended absence has never been officially addressed, she has often been described in passing as “being busy with work at the hospital,” or “visiting a relative,” however this doesn’t explain why Lorna Laidlaw has been absent for four months now.
It was this extended absence that prompted one fan to express concern over Lorna’s wellbeing, as they wrote: “Genuinely hope Lorna Laidlaw is ok, can’t understand otherwise why a fantastic actress in Doctors is hardly in it.”
Will Aggie return in the coming days? Viewers will have to tune in to find out!
