Janet Street Porter doesn’t want Notre Dame to be rebuilt for emotional reason

Janet Street Porter divided opinion on today's Loose Women by insisting she doesn't want Notre Dame Cathedral to be rebuilt.

The Loose Women panelist admitted she was "sad" to see huge parts of the 850-year-old building being destroyed in the devastating blaze.

However, she suggested the money being donated to restore the building could be donated to worthier causes and confessed she was more shocked by the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Several billionaires, including the richest man in Europe, Bernard Arnault , have pledged to donate over 00 300 million Euros (£170 million) to restore the iconic cathedral.

Janet believes the be better spent on dealing with poverty, drug dealing and gang warfare in the Paris suburbs and the Calais jungle.

She said: "I was sad to see it burn down. it represents more than just a building. It's part of the French civilisation.

"On the other hand the fire that really shocked me was Grenfell Tower. Let's not detract from that. That's truly horrible because of all the people inside.

"I was sad to see [the Notre Dame] burned down but I don’t want to see it rebuilt."

Janet pointed out that the architect would not have known it would last so long and proposed restoring part of the monument as a memorial.

The rest of the Loose Women panel were not in agreement as they gave their opinions.

Andrea McLean felt it was "shocking and upsetting" to see the "romantic and special" building to be destroyed.

Coleen Nolan said: "I saw it and I was really sad. I think it's because you see hundreds of years of history burning to the ground. Whatever they do they can never get that back again..

She added: "It's all that history. I look at it and see it survived everything. So many wars. And gone in a blink of an eye."

Angry This Morning viewers took to Twitter to hit back at Janet's viewpoint.

One viewer said: "It's not just a building, it's a place of worship and the heart of Christianity in France. People are allowed to decide what they want to spend their money on, and they shouldn't be shamed for helping one cause and not another."

"To not rebuild would be a crime," added another.

A third agreed: "Why would you not want the Notre Dame to be rebuilt?! That building represents so much more to people than its history perceives…"

However, some people were in agreement with Janet over the situation.

One fan said: "That's the 1st thing Janet has said that I agree with."

Another added: "Unpopular opinion: why not give the money being raised for #NotreDameCathedralFire to the #GrenfellTower people who still do not have a house to go home to years later! There are more important causes for this money to go to."
