Julian Clary addresses why daytime TV always feels a bit sordid for him

Julian Clary asks Holly Willoughby if she woke up in a skip

Actor and comedian Julian Clary has admitted daytime TV for him feels sordid due to his childhood.

Growing up in Middlesex with his dad, mum and two sisters, the 64-year-old has spoken about his upbringing in the past as he said his household was “all comedy”.

Julian is known by the nation for his quick-witted humour along with appearing in a string of popular and well-known TV shows.

Starring in the likes of Friday Night Live, Who Do You Think You Are and his own game show Sticky Moments with Julian Clary, the star has been in the public eye for decades.

Although he’s never off screens for long, it appears Julian didn’t watch much growing up.

When asked if he watched much TV as a child, the 64-year-old confessed he only watched programmes when it was night.

He told RadioTimes: “I wasn’t allowed to watch television until it got dark, so daytime TV always feels a bit sordid to me.

“You should be doing something other than watching three hours of This Morning.

“I don’t mind appearing on it, don’t get me wrong, but there’s more to life than daytime TV!”

Viewers will be able to see Julian each week alongside the likes of Lucy Beaumont, Sam Campbell, Sue Perkins and Susan Wokoma as they join the 16th series of Taskmaster.

Having hosted his own game show in the past, Julian now gets to see how it feels to be on the receiving end as a contestant.

Admitting that he enjoyed taking part in the show more than anything else he’s done on TV for years, Julian confessed he got stuck in with the show.

He continued: “You do get brainwashed. It became all about the Taskmaster and desperately wanting to please Greg Davies, get the marks and have him smile at you.

“I was really quite infatuated with him. He’s very big, with a magnificent presence. “

In the next episode, Channel 4 viewers will see Alex Horne set the celebrities new challenges where they’ll then be given scores back in the studio by Greg.

A synopsis for the instalment reveals fans will witness Julian destroy a table, Lucy munch on a tree and Sue play the panpipes while verbally insulting Alex.

Taskmaster continues Thursdays on Channel 4 from 9pm.
