Kate Garraway overwhelmed as Good Morning Britain guest reveals she treated Derek

Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway became overwhelmed with emotion as she met a nurse who cared for author Michael Rosen during his Covid battle – and then learned that she had also cared for her husband Derek, whose battle with the disease is still ongoing.

As the realisation hit home, Kate, 54, who married Derek in 2005, felt urged to share a hug with Beth Dixon, and leapt up to do so after being reassured it was fine to by co-host Richard Bacon.

Knowing that Derek had been on the same ward as the acclaimed children’s writer, known for books like We’re Going On A Bear Hunt, Kate said: “I have to ask you on a personal note, because you cared for Michael, and Derek, we’ve now found out, was two beds away. Did you care for him?”

“I would have done, yeah,” said Beth, who worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital before the pandemic hit.

“God that is amazing,” said an emotional Kate. “Thank you so much by the way.”

Thinking back to her time caring for the stricken political lobbyist turned psychotherapist, Beth said: “We tried, we did everything that we could. We put our all into it.”

Derek was hospitalised in March 2020 after contracting Covid-19 and remained in hospital for a year.

His plight has been shared by Kate in two moving ITV documentaries about the family’s situation, Finding Derek, which aired in 2021, and Caring For Derek which was broadcast in February this year.

Fans have been moved by how life has changed for the Draper-Garraway clan because of Covid.

Just a few months before Derek became ill, he and children Darcey and Billy – now 17 and 12 – had welcomed a jubilant Kate after she left the jungle following her appearance on the 2019 series of I'm A Celebrity….Get Me Out Of Here!.

Derek has remained in the spotlight ever since, as his battle with long Covid means that the family still don't know how far his recovery will progress.

Several months after returning to his home, Derek is still seriously debilitated by the illness and Kate and her children make the most of their time with him, while hoping he will one day be able to live a more normal life again.

Moved by Beth’s humble comment that the medical staff did their best to help Derek, Kate added: “Gosh, I feel quite… I don’t know whether I can leap up and hug you but I’m going to. Thank you so much – that’s amazing.”

On the daily breakfast show, Michael, who was in a coma during his time in hospital, explained that he hadn’t met a nurse called Beth since she looked after him, during which time she kept a diary for him to help once he came out of his coma.

GMB had a surprise in store for the Children's Laureate and Michael was stunned as Kate and Richard then welcomed the nurse into the studio to sit with the author.
