Narcos broke new ground on Netflix when it first aired its epic crime drama following the life of Pablo Escobar (played by Wagner Moura) back in 2015. The legacy of the show continued after its end in 2017 with the birth of Narcos: Mexico, which followed the illegal drug trade in Mexico in the 1980s. While the latter has been renewed for another season, not much news has been released about it yet. So here are some crime dramas to whet your appetite while you wait for more news of the drama.

1. El Chapo

Fans of real-life crime stories set in South America should look no further than El Chapo.

The series ran for three seasons on Univision and Netflix, following the story of the Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán (Marco de la O).

The show follows the drug lord in the 1980s when he was a low-level member of the Guadalajara Cartel.

El Chapo goes on to examine his rise to the height of his power in the gritty criminal adaptation.

2. Peaky Blinders

Fans of gangland crime and gritty drama should look no further than Peaky Blinders.

Set in Birmingham in post-World War I, the series follows the rise of the Peaky Blinders gang led by the brutal Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy).

As the gang dabble in betting, drug trafficking and even the world of politics, the stylised drama is known for its quick pace and epic soundtrack.

The show has already run for five seasons on BBC One and another outing is already in the works, giving viewers plenty to sink their teeth into.

3. Drug Lords

For fans of Narcos hoping to find out the real story behind the Pablo Escobar and other drug trafficking stories, Netflix show Drug Lords looks into this.

Running for two seasons on the platform, the documentary series examines the lives of notorious drug kingpins.

This is examined through contemporary footage, interviews with experts as well as a focus on the long-lasting legacy of what they did.

The harrowing crime docu-series also focuses on different cases across the world, dissecting how they came to influence in their individual domains.

4. Breaking Bad

There is perhaps no better drug-centred drama than Breaking Bad, which ran for five seasons on AMC and Netflix.

The show followed Walter White (Bryan Cranston) as a struggling high-school chemistry teacher battling stage three cancer.

He turns to producing and selling crystallised methamphetamine with his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in order to build a nest egg of money for his family.

The show went on to win multiples awards, including Emmys and Golden Globes during its time.

Now, there is also a new film being released on Netflix as a spin-off to the original series entitled El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.

5. Sacred Games

India’s answer to crime drama is the massively popular Sacred Games series, which has run for two seasons on Netflix.

The series follows the story of police officer Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) as he attempts to stop a tragedy unfolding in Mumbai.

However, he finds himself quickly being pulled into the criminal underbelly of the city and one of its criminal overlord’s Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui).

Two seasons of the show have currently aired on Netflix, with fans hoping to see it renewed for another outing.

Narcos and Narcos: Mexico are currently available to stream on Netflix.
