Power’s hit spin-off Power Book II: Ghost made its highly-anticipated return to Starz with an action-packed episode. Michael Rainey Jr who portrayed Tariq St Patrick spoke exclusively to express.co.uk and teased grandmother Estelle Green (played by Debbi Morgan) could suffer from serious health complications.
During the premiere, fans watched as Tariq tried to put a stop to his little sister Yasmine ‘Yaz’ St Parick (Amya Tate) from burning the house down as she attempted to make breakfast.
This woke their grandmother, who berated Yaz – despite this, it was made clear Estelle was facing challenges with her health.
“Grandma, she’s going through her own things, he also wants to make sure she’s good,” responded Micheal, when asked about Estelle’s health.
He continued: “Tariq, he’s gonna you know, he’s gonna make sure he’s gonna try to make sure that she’s gonna you know.”
During the episode, Yaz opened up to Tariq and revealed Estelle had begun heavily drinking again, but this time it was worse.
With his mother Tasha in witness protection, he was desperate to get back in touch with her for guidance on what to do.
Tariq had noticed something was off with his grandmother as she didn’t remember him coming home the night before.
Speaking on protecting his character’s family. Michael said: “He’s going to make sure she’s good, you know Estelle, Grandma she’s a little hard-headed.”
With a ton of responsibility weighing on him, including university, the Tejada drug cartel and now Yaz’s safety, Michael was asked how his character would navigate through it all.
He revealed: “You know Tariq, he’s like Ghost. He always finds a way to handle what he has to handle.”
“It’s obviously not easy for him, navigating throughout the world, doing the school thing, doing the streets and doing the family man thing.
Micheal explained: “He’s young, figuring everything out and I think he’s doing a pretty good job and growing up pretty fast, he’s handling things pretty well.”
Fan’s of the original series of Power will remember how Tariq put himself in the position to grow fast.
Although his father James ‘Ghost’ St Patrick was involved in the drug business, he ensured his family were shielded from it – until Tariq’s curiosity got the best of him.
By the end of Power, Tariq resented his father so much, he pulled the trigger and shot him dead at his own club.
As a result, he was burdened with every parental responsibility after his mother took the fall for him and was jailed.
Michael lifted the lid on Tariq’s worries: “Death is weighing on him as well because he just committed a murder.
“He’s worried about Yasmin, he’s still worried about Monet, he’s still got to give money to her,” he added.
At the end of season one, Tariq killed his professor Jabari Reynolds (Justin McManus) for learning the truth about him after becoming enthralled with the teenager.
Including the fact Tariq had been selling drugs for Queen pin Monet Tejada (Mary J.Blige) and used her money to pay for his mother’s legal fees.
Fans will have to stay tuned to see how Tariq will navigate the different demands in his life and whether or not he will be able to ensure Yasmine’s safety.
