Vinny (Bradley Johnson) finds himself on the receiving end of a brutal beating in Emmerdale as dad Vinny Ashdale (Reece Dinsdale) lashes out in anger.
Viewers will know that Vinny has built quite the relationship with Paul over the past couple of months, and the pair have well and truly attempted to make up for lost time.
Speaking about Vinny’s feelings towards his dad, actor Bradley Johnson — who plays the character — said: ‘I feel at the moment Vinny just wants this happy family.
‘Having his dad back, and working at the scrapyard, Vinny’s quite happy. In his mind he can see the happy ending of him, his mum and his dad all living together and having the happily ever after.
‘Vinny’s has his doubts [about Paul]. Especially when the whole shop incident happened when Mandy was accusing Paul of stealing the money.
‘Mandy was wrong, so I think in Vinny’s head that makes him think that his dad has changed or turned a corner, and that he is more truthful than he was years ago.
‘At the moment, Vinny’s trusting him more and more with each day.’
However, things take something of a turn next week, as Paul desperately attempts to retrieve cash which he lost during a bet, and thus he steals Ellis Chapman’s (Aaron Anthony) watch.
Vinny’s interest is piqued over the missing watch, and given that he and Paul have clashed in recent weeks regarding the latter’s gambling habit, he wastes little time in confronting his dad.
Bradley continued: ‘Vinny’s found out that his dad is back gambling and that’s shaken him up. When the watch goes, it’s a massive dread and doubt. He goes: “Oh my God. Is it my dad? Is he back in that bad place?” Was his mum right? Can he still trust Paul?
‘Vinny has put so much trust in Paul, so when he thinks he’s taken the watch, it hurts him. It’s really upset him that he’s let his dad into his life with open arms and that he could do something like this.
‘I think there’s a lot of anger, so when he confronts him and shouts his mouth off to his dad, his dad doesn’t take it too well. His dad wants the happy ever with Mandy and son, but Vinny knows about his gambling again and he thinks he’s taken the watch, so I don’t think Paul isn’t going to take it nicely.
‘He really hurts him. Vinny’s pushing for answers, and Paul doesn’t know what to say. He’s got him in this corner and he won’t back down, and Paul just loses it. He beats Vinny in the scrapyard and leaves him in a pretty bad place.’
‘Paul reacts in a really bad way, and he lets his anger get the worst of him. We see a really dark side to Paul. We see him hit Vinny. Vinny is absolutely shocked, and his whole world comes crashing down on him.
But what does this mean for the future? Will Vinny be able to forgive Paul? Or is this the end of their relationship for good this time?
Bradley said: ‘I feel like the whole trusting is just gone. His whole world has come crashing down, because he’s let his dad in with open arms. Vinny wants a happy family, and he thought Paul wanted a happy family.
‘He’s seen his mum happy again, and his mum has been letting Paul back into her life, slowly. He doesn’t want to ruin that. Mandy to Vinny is his everything, and he doesn’t want to break her heart, so as well as what he’s going through, he doesn’t want to make her upset.’
‘Obviously, Paul has got this life that Vinny doesn’t know about what with him not being in his life for years, so Vinny doesn’t know everything about his dad — or everything he’s been through.
I think if he was going to forgive his dad, it would take him a very, very long time to gain any sort of trust again. ‘
