The Australian Open has faced backlash following news that Novak Djokovic will compete in the tennis event, after he was exempt from vaccination rules. All players and staff at the tournament must be vaccinated or have an exemption granted by an expert independent panel. However, some have suggested the tennis star is getting “special treatment”. Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster chatted about the sport story on their GB News breakfast show on Wednesday morning. However, as the presenting duo appeared to have differing views on the matter, Isabel swiftly snapped at Eamonn.

Eamonn began by informing GB News viewers about the sports story.

However, it wasn’t long before Isabel accused Eamonn of defending the tennis star.

Eamonn told viewers: “Novak Djokovic has been given an exemption from vaccination rules so that he can play in the Australian Open.”

“Of course he has,” Isabel remarked.

“So, what do you make of that?” Eamonn asked viewers.

“See, it doesn’t actually say he’s not vaccinated though,” he added.

However, Isabel swiftly snapped at her co-host: “Oh I see. There you are sticking up for him.”

“It’s a privacy type thing,” Eamonn remarked.

“Oh, it’s not about privacy!” Isabel fumed. “It’s about his body – it’s a temple.”

Eamonn replied: “Well, it’s about the tournament and is he going to draw viewers and punters to watch it and whatever.

“But, Australia’s been through a lot in the lockdown and there’s a perception that Djokovic is getting a free ride, special treatment and all of this,” he explained.

Later on in the programme, the presenting duo debated the matter further with sports broadcaster Paul Coyte.

Speaking about Novak’s exemption, Isabel questioned: “Is he getting special treatment?

“As Eamonn was saying earlier, Australia’s had a shocker they’ve been through the most strict lockdowns of any nation I can think of and yet here he [Novak] is getting special treatment isn’t he?”

“Well, I’ve got the list of medical exemptions,” Paul declared.

He continued: “So, inflammatory cardiac illness in the last three months – because we don’t know what the reason is – acute medical condition, covid-19 infection in the last six months, or world number one and current Australian Open champion I think are the exemptions.

“I’m still trying to work out which one of those it is,” Paul joked.

Attempting to defend the tennis star once again, Eamonn remarked: “Whatever it is, it’s his business. He doesn’t have to make it public.

“The authorities are happy, even though they would want him there at the tournament.

“They would definitely want a very big name like that,” he conceded.

Breakfast with Eamonn & Isabel airs on GB News on weekdays at 6am.
