The Chase’s Anne Hegerty addresses Mastermind appearance failures

The Chase: Anne Hegerty tells Bradley ‘I hate you’

There is no doubting Anne Hegerty’s intellect on ITV’s The Chase however even she fell foul of the stress of appearing when she took part in BBC’s Mastermind.

The Chaser, known as The Governess in the show, has appeared in the high-pressure general knowledge quiz twice and her performance left a lot to be desired.

“I wasn’t that good at Mastermind. I’ve been on it twice and lost both times,” she conceded exclusively to Express.co.uk at the Virgin Media Television autumn schedule launch.

Comparing what it is like being on the other side of a quiz, Anne continued: “I love being a Chaser and I find it easier that we’re sitting down to be honest because when they’re [the contestants] standing up I look at them and sometimes I can see their knees shaking.

“So I would rather be a Chaser [than a contestant],” she admitted. “But at the same time, we do give them advantages.

“We give them a head start on the board, we give them a head start in the final chase, they have the opportunity to push us back, so we do give them opportunities.

“And when we’re doing Beat the Chasers we give them like a massive time advantage.”

“If I’m not playing I like just kind of watching the clock and gradually their time advantage disappears and then they’re level and then we get ahead,” she said.

Anne, who was working as a journalist at the time, first appeared on Mastermind in 1987 with the specialist topic: The Life and Works of Lorenz Hart – the famous lyricist.

In 2019 she made light of her Mastermind appearance when two throwback pictures of her appearance resurfaced.

The images were posted on a fan group on Twitter and she looks almost unrecognisable with a curly bob hairstyle and glasses wearing an oversized multicoloured frock.

A screenshot shows her sat in the famous chair with Anne responding to the tweet.

“Recorded late in 1987 – on the same night as the King’s Cross fire, as it happens,” she revealed

One user replied: “OMG you look so funny [crying with laugher emoji].”(sic)

Anne humorously responded: “I look pretty funny now!” Ironically Anne was one of the favourites to take over the hosting of Mastermind from John Humphrey’s when he announced his retirement after 18 years of running the BBC show.

However, the role eventually went to award-winning newsreader and broadcaster Clive Myrie.
