The Crown – Season 6 Part 2: Official trailer
The Crown has addressed Prince Harry’s shameful Nazi fancy dress from 2005 in its final ever episode. The much-documented incident saw the now Duke of Sussex, who was then 20, turn up to a “native and colonial” themed fancy dress party, hosted by Olympic showjumper Richard Meade, dressed in a shirt bearing a swastika.
In the award-winning Netflix show William (played by Ed McVey), Harry (Luther Ford) and Kate (Meg Bellamy) are seen in a costume shop with some friends selecting outfits for the party. Harry is having difficulty deciding what to dress as until he suddenly sees the famously “shameful” costume of the Afrika Korps uniform, with a swastika at the sleeve.
“Germany had an empire, didn’t they?” He enquires. “What about this?” While Kate is shown to be tentative and suggests that he at least cover the swastika, William encourages his brother.
“Oh, come on. Wearing the outfit doesn’t make him a Nazi. Isn’t that the joke?” He says as a gleeful Harry does the Heil Hitler salute in a mirror. The scene also sees Harry cheekily suggest that Kate wear a wedding dress costume, quipping that she must have already thought of it.
The show then cuts to the scene which shows how Harry got photographed in the offensive outfit. He initially has the sleeves covered up with another jacket at the party and no one is any the wiser.

However later, while someone dressed as Queen Elizabeth II sings I Want To Break Free by the rock band Queen, he takes it off – much to the shock of two guests in the audience.
They snap a picture on their phones, which is the same image that was broadcast around the world the following day.
In the aftermath, Harry rows with his father over the picture and, in scenes that mirror what the Duke wrote about the incident in his memoir Spare, he lashes out at William.
“You were all for the uniform, egging me on. Suddenly you’re Mr Morality. Stabbing me in the back… how many faces does this man have?” he asks.

In his memoir, Spare Harry claimed that both William and Kate “howled with laughter” when they saw his outfit choice in 2005.
After the photo was published worldwide, The Royal Family apologised but the Duke himself failed to address the incident until very recently – when he called it one of the “biggest mistakes” of his life.
In the third episode of his Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan, he expressed his regret and “shame” and said “all I wanted to do was make it right.”
The Crown, Season Six – Part Two, is available to stream on Netflix now.
