Bradley Walsh took over the role of Pop Larkin from David Jason while Mariette, originally portrayed by Catherine Zeta Jones was replaced by Sabrina Bartlett. The Larkins got off to a swift start as fans were immediately immersed in family life but some viewers felt they weren’t given enough time to learn more abut the characters. Others argued the series seemed to fit all of the storylines from Darling Buds of May into the first episode.
Taking to Twitter to comment on the first episode, Gail posted: “I’ll stick with #thelarkins but it’s no match to the original Darling Buds of May & they haven’t quite managed to do what #AllCreaturesGreatAndSmall have done with their reboot which is just magical (although I note original Tristan is playing a potty mouthed vicar in this).”
Elton added: “Nowhere near as good as the 90’s original! Shouldn’t have bothered! #TheLarkins.”
Sam shared: “Well…I’ve watched 20 minutes of #thelarkins ….that’s enough for me….absolute rubbish….back to Netflix and #chesapeakeshores.”
“Can’t watch this sorry #TheLarkins,” @babynewt posted.
@plainoldgoldband tweeted: “No time to set up characters or setting in #thelarkins – so important with a remake because huge shoes to fill.
“They seem to be relying on prior knowledge of Darling Buds yet want to be unique in their version.
“You can’t have it both ways. And that’s why it doesn’t work for me.”
However, there were plenty of viewers who did appear to enjoy the remake.
Laura Salt posted: “#TheLarkins I’m a huge fan of the original & this is just wonderful. Perfick Sunday night tv. Hints of the original without spoiling either series.”
Lucy Goose continued: “Absolutely brilliant #TheLarkins so great to watch and nostalgic.
“Great job to all the actors! This is so needed for a Sunday night.”
Joanna Henry tweeted: “TheLarkins is better than I thought it would be. Quite enjoyable.”
The first episode introduced The Larkins to the village and it was clear they caused a stir.
Speaking of the series, Marietta star Sabrina recalled getting a black eye as she filmed a fight with Pauline (Natalie Mitson).
She explained: “Pauline and Mariette are very competitive, they always have been from a young age.
“So that sort of provokes a play for competing for both their affections, which comes to a head in the strawberry fields in episode four when we have a catfight.”
Sabrina added: “One of my favourite scenes I think to shoot for the Larkins has been my catfight I have with Pauline in the strawberry fields in episode four.
“We’d just had some cake during our lunch break, had cups of tea, and we’re both going, oh, you know, let’s get a bit of energy up for this fight, yeah.
“Cut to ten minutes later, the whole thing was a blur, I don’t really remember it, although I suddenly remembered feeling this pain in the top of my brow.”
She concluded: “And I realised that by the evening I had a black eye, which was absolutely amazing, and one of the things that I’m most proud about in my acting career has been to achieve a black eye from a catfight.”
The Larkins airs Sunday on ITV at 8pm.
