The Last Kingdom season 4 release date: When does Last Kingdom start? How many episodes?

The Last Kingdom season 4 is due to return to Netflix soon and fans cannot wait to see more of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon). The series has been airing since 2015, with the first two series being shown on BBC Two and BBC America up until 2017. The show then moved to Netflix for the third series, and the fourth series will also be released on the streaming platform.

When does The Last Kingdom Season 4 start?

Season three of The Last Kindom aired back in November 2018, which means fans have been waiting a total of 17 months for the new series to drop.

Thankfully they will be pleased to hear the wait is finally over, as season four will air on the streaming platform as of April 26.

The series, which is produced in Hungary, was first shown in America before making its way over to the UK a couple of weeks later.

On March 19, 2020, Netflix announced the official release date for the new series would be April 26, and fans cannot wait to start watching.

The Last Kingdom Twitter account announced Alexander Dreymon, aka Uhtred son of Uhtred, would be discussing all things The Last Kingdom with Backstage during an Instagram Live session on Friday.

How many episodes in The Last Kingdom Season 4?

The first two series were made up of a total of eight episodes, but since it moved to Netflix extra episodes have been added to the newer series.

Like season three, the new season four will be made up of 10 hour-long episodes, which are all due to drop on the streaming platform at the same time.

The episodes have not yet been named but fans can look forward to seeing plenty more conflict and action involving the iconic Uhtred.

The new series will not be available to watch on the BBC this time around, as it has been made solely for Netflix by Carnival Films.

Fans have already taken to Twitter to share their excitement for the new series, with one fan saying: “In preparation for the fourth season coming, this arseling has totally re-binged the first three seasons of The Last Kingdom on Netflix, and the adventures of Uhtred of Bebbanburg and the Kingdom of Wessex. This series totally crushes Game of Thrones.”

Earlier in April Netflix dropped a trailer for the new series, and The Last Kingdom Twitter account shared the video, saying: “Your cries have been heard, Arselings! The season 4 trailer is here. Just a little taste of what is to come.”

Some dramatic music plays as Uhtred is heard saying: “I have lost my home, I have lost my name, I am no longer Uhtred of Bebbanburg.”

Conflict is escalating between the Saxons and the Danes, with the throne of King Alfred being under immense threat.

The trailer shows plenty of intense fight scenes with Uhtred once again having to choose between his head and his heart, and pick a side to fight for.

The video includes the words: “This season a hero rises to unite a nation.” Fans have commented on the trailer on Twitter, with one fan saying: “I’ve been doing a marathon of #TheLastKingdom, for the 100th time! I’m so thrilled for season 4. Thanks for the trailer!”.

Alongside Dreymon as the main character, fans can expect to see more of Emily Cox as Brida – Uhtred’s oldest friend turned lover.

She is a Saxon but was adopted by the Danes after her village was destroyed. She tries to convince Uhtred to stay on her side but he often absconds, leaving her feeling confused.

Beocca (Ian Hart) became a fan-favourite in the series as the priest and great friend of Uhtred, later on in the show he starts serving Alfred of Wessex (David Dawson).

Other cast members in the new series include Magnus Bruun as Cnut, who admired Brida for her defiant and feisty nature.

Fans fell in love with the character of Osferth, played by Ewan Mitchell, who is the bastard son of King Alfred.

He was a monk but left the monastery after discovering a fascination with Uhtred’s culture and decided to join him as a loyal supporter in battle.

To recap season three, Alfred dies and when the Danes get word of his death, they start marching towards Wessex.

Brida finds out it was the crafty Aethelwold (actor) who killed Ragnar (Tobias Santelmann) and she sends a messenger to tell Uhtred of the news.

Aethelwold admits to Uhtred during the battle that he killed Ragnar, and promises he will never return to bother them if he is allowed to run away.

But Uhtred stabs him, which frees Ragnar’s soul, and he moves on to the sacred Valhalla. Despite Brida and Uhtred still being friends, her allegiances still lie with the Danes.
