Timothy West and Prunella Scales read old love letters
The One Show aired a special film which saw Timothy West and Prunella Scales reading through their old love letters from the early stages of their relationship.
Roman Kemp introduced the segment and said: “We have been very fortunate to be invited into the home of two actors who have charmed the nation for decades.”
Alex Jones added: “Yes, here is Timothy West and Prunella Scales on surviving life’s ups and downs as they celebrate 60 years of marriage, and it all started with a love letter.”
As the short film began to play, Timothy and Prunella were looking through their old photographs and stumbled across one of Prunella teaching one of their sons how to play cricket.
She noted: “That is a good photograph, teaching him how to hold a cricket bat!”

Timothy went on to narrate: “Prunella and I will be celebrating our diamond wedding anniversary next month and it has been 60 splendid years together.
“It has been important to us to record our love story in our memoir. We first met when we were cast in a really terrible play.
“She was just a nice person who was just as bored of the play as I was. Pru is known for the many characters she has played on screen.
“When I first met Pru I was married with a young daughter, but the relationship was falling apart. Pru and I stayed in touch and we started writing letters to each other, we loved letters.”

Sitting down and reminiscing the early days of their relationship, Timothy read from one letter: “9.30am, I am having scrambled eggs all by myself in your honour.”
Prunella read another one: “Gosh it was lovely, dialling you directly last night you sounded so near kiss kiss kiss heart heart heart.”
Once again narrating the short film, Timothy explained: “In 2013 Pru was diagnosed with Dementia.
“At first the effects were slight but there has been a steady decline so it has been wonderful revisiting our letters and photos.”
Timothy later opened up about Prunella’s dementia journey and how they decided to continue filming their Channel 5 show, Great Canal Journeys.
It soon became too much for Prunella as she often forgot where they were or where they were going.
The short film came to an end with Prunella asking Timothy: “Are you glad we are married?” which left Timothy to express: “Oh yes, thank you, yes!”
He added: “I think we are as strong as ever because we need each other more. We are very happy and very fortunate really.”
The One Show airs weeknights from 7pm on BBC One.
