First Lady Melania Trump is already getting into the holiday spirit. Just after Thanksgiving, Mrs. Trump unveiled the White House Christmas decorations which have been met with some interesting commentary. In a video posted on Twitter, the woman behind “Be Best” showed off her crimson Christmas theme which includes 40 massive, berry colored trees, and 14,000 red ornaments.
In 1961, Jackie Kennedy began the tradition of selecting a theme for the official White House Christmas tree, and Mrs. Trump chose crimson to represent the stripes found on the presidential seal signifying valor and bravery. So has she gotten all of her Christmas shopping done? The first lady revealed whether she’s getting her husband, Donald Trump. anything for Christmas.

A gift for the president
As is their tradition the Trumps will head to their Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida to celebrate Christmas. However, when asked if she would be purchasing her husband a Christmas gift this year, the first lady didn’t have anything in mind just yet. She said, “Oh, I didn’t think of that — I’m too busy. We do sometimes exchange gifts, but I’m so busy now. And it’s very important I focus on this project now.”
A different theme for each room
The Christmas decorations in the White House are a massive undertaking, This year the first lady chose to do a different theme in each room. She said, “Every room has a different representation, and this year it’s a theme of American Treasures. This is representing — you could see the color red. It represents the bravery, heart, and patriotism. The ornaments represent how each child can excel on their own path — through education, arts, sport, technology — and they could be the best. And they’re beautiful ornaments, as well as handmade — some of them are antique.”
This year, the White House received 6,000 applications from volunteers looking to help set up the decorations and were able to choose 230 people to help get everything set up in six days. The official 2018 White House Christmas tree is a green Fraser which has been placed in the Blue Room at the White House and has 500 feet of blue velvet ribbon embroidered in gold with each state and territory.
The first lady explained, “It’s patriotic, and it reminds us of the American flag. We have thousands and thousands of people coming through here and see the decorations. So it’s very exciting.”
Responding to the backlash against her decorations
The first lady’s crimson theme is certainly an interesting choice, with many folks on the internet calling it reminiscent of a “bloodbath” or The Handmaid’s Tale. One Twitter user said, “So it looks like @FLOTUS has chosen “dystopian nightmare” as her Xmas theme for the 2nd year in a row #MerryChristmas.” Another Twitter user said, “How festive! Melania’s trees are covered in blood this year!”However, Mrs. Trump doesn’t seem bothered in the least. She explained, “It’s the 21st century, and everybody has different tastes. I think they look fantastic. I hope everybody will come over and visit it.”
She also said, ” I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holidays, a prosperous and peaceful New Year.”
