Home improvement is one of the most popular reality show genres at the moment. Hit shows like Property Brothers and Flip or Flop allow people to get a front-row seat for the home buying and home renovation process. One of those popular shows is an HGTV show entitled Windy City Rehab. There’s one aspect of the show some fans cannot stand, however. Let’s take a closer look at the show itself, some controversies surrounding the host, and the one thing the host does fans are puzzled by.
What is ‘Windy City Rehab?’
According to HGTV, Windy City Rehab is hosted by the former host of the DIY Network show Kitchen Crashers, Alison Victoria. According to HGTV, she is “a pro at transforming drab spaces into daring designs that pair vintage elements with modern functionality.” Victoria hails from Chicago originally, and the program provides her with an opportunity to spruce up older homes in some of Chi-town’s most historic and culturally rich neighborhoods.
The show is quite popular, but it’s not without its detractors. This season in particular, there have been former clients of Allison’s reaching out to her while this season’s show is going on. It’s led to some uncomfortable moments for the host.
Controversies surrounding ‘Windy City Rehab’
It’s been a tumultuous season for Victoria. Along with splitting with her partner, she’s also had some legal issues she alluded to in a recent episode. People reported she had something of a breakdown upon receiving an unexpected text message. She got emotional and said the following:
“If you only knew what comes into my phone … have people coming out of the woodwork. I have homeowners that are being contacted by the press … All I ever did, and all I’ve ever done, is design. Honestly … Sorry, guys, I’m freaking out…”
She’d later reveal that former clients are trying to sue her for the faulty construction on one of her homes. She was quick to point out that she isn’t responsible for construction.
It’s an unfortunate turn for the show, though it’s tough to tell how much of the strife is legitimate and how much has been manufactured for the sake of added drama. There is one other element of the show that has stood out to fans as well, and not positively. They have a bone to pick with one of her design habits she continually and habitually repeats.
Why ‘Windy City Rehab’ fans want Allison Victoria to put the black paint down
Windy City Rehab fans took to Reddit to discuss a rather annoying habit of the show’s host: Victoria’s tendency to paint many things black. It seems like her default color for many antiques. One fan pointed out the following: “It breaks my heart that Allison Victoria keeps painting antique pieces black! Make it stop!” Yet another fan critiqued her choice of locations to visit, saying she shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near such invaluable objects: “She should be only allowed to visit dumpster not antique store. She destroyed timeless pieces with her stupid black paint.”
It’s unclear why painting things black, even antiques it could hurt the value of, is such a favorite design style for Victoria, but fans have recognized her penchant for dark paint. They’ve noticed, and they’re puzzled why she keeps sullying classic antiques with a new, unwelcome look. It’s an odd creative choice for an otherwise talented designer, and fans hope to see her put the paint down sometime soon.
