Zara McDermott fights tears after Strictly Come Dancing debut sparks concern

Zara McDermott discusses her injuries from dancing

Love Island star Zara McDermott left Strictly Come Dancing viewers concerned after her performance on the BBC dance show.

Dancing the Cha Cha Cha to Crush by Jennifer Paige, Zara, 26, struggled at points and was later branded “wooden” by judge Craig Revel Horwood.

Fans flocked to Twitter during the dance, with one fan writing: “Zara’s Cha Cha Cha – lots of content in this dance. Her walks were half decent but everything else felt staccato.

“She seemed quite stiff through the hips and back. Lots of attempts at basic technique but not always fulfilled. Showed some good flexibility!”

Ryan remarked: “Craig was right about Zara. She is gorgeous and Cha Cha is a difficult dance but she looks very wooden and needs more fluidity. Loosen up a lot more. She’ll have time to grow though especially with Graz as pro. He is brilliant #Strictly.” (sic)

A third user added: “Weird. Zara was basically just preening and posing. There was very little dancing. She might be good but it felt like this was a routine to cover for the fact she can’t dance yet.”

David said: “Zara was a bit stiff tonight for that dance and should only get 4 or 5. Mosti and Shirley are just being ridiculous because it wasn’t that great.”

However, another user said: “Craig gives Zara a Graziano a three?! What’s wrong with him today? #Strictly.”

Seanie added: “Well done Zara and Graziano that was a great routine from you both on the first week I’ll give you a six like Motsi and well done to the Strictly band for doing Crush by Jennifer Paige which was never on #Strictly before I think but it’s a good song.”

In contrast to Craig’s harsh comments, fellow judge Anton du Beke said: “We want more of everything, so keep building on that performance. I think you will be one to watch.”

Craig scored Zara a very low three, Motsi Mabuse scored her a six, Shirley Ballas gave out a five as did Anton.

Zara, who was almost crying following the performance, exclaimed to Graziano: “I’m really happy, I am over the moon with it, and doing it with you, you are the best teacher ever.”

Her partner Sam Thompson was wearing a shirt with Zara’s faces plastered all over it in the audience to show her support.

She said she could not look at him as she was worried she’d start laughing on the dance floor.

Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday on BBC One.
