AI chief urges Britain to build a rival to ChatGPT for UK’s security services – after Rishi Sunak warned containing artificial intelligence should be a global priority alongside pandemics and nuclear war

An artificial intelligence chief has urged Britain to build a rival to ChatGPT for the UK’s security services – after Rishi Sunak warned that containing AI should be a global priority.

Marc Warner, whose company Faculty was hired to carry out research before the AI Safety Summit, claimed the rival would be a ‘crucial capability for national security and defence’.

It comes as Ministers plan to highlight the positive benefits of AI by encouraging the police to deploy the technology to tackle crime.

Rishi Sunak is preparing to welcome world leaders and tech magnates to an AI summit this week, just days after he warned humanity faces extinction if AI was to spiral out of control.

Government advisers have been considering whether Britain should build a sovereign capability to rival that of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, instead of depending on the services of US tech giants, The Telegraph reported.

The current capabilities of Chatbots such as ChatGPT include quickly analysing text as well as providing humanlike language responses to questions.

Warner, 39, who gave advice to the Government amid the Covid pandemic, said the UK would want to have ‘as much control as possible’ over the rival technology.

A report in August that was co-authored by HCHQ on ChatGPT said the technology showed ‘promising potential’ for intelligence work. However, it would currently only be able to replace an ‘extremely junior analyst’.

Palantir, a US tech company, has showed how chatbots could be used in warfare to give real-time analysis and advice to commanders.

Warner co-founded Faculty 10 years ago – with the start-up working closely with the Government on implementing AI technologies.

His remarks come as the Prime Minister gets ready to host world leaders and technology companies at Bletchley Park at the UK’s AI Safety Summit.

The Prime Minister has been criticised for inviting Yi Zeng, a professor from the state-controlled Chinese Academy of Sciences, to the meeting, which is the first-ever major global AI safety summit.

Former PM Liz Truss has urged Mr Sunak to reconsider the invitation.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman is also convening an event tomorrow which will bring together government, law enforcement and the tech industry to discuss how best to tackle child sexual abuse images that have been created using AI.
