Baby saved after mother hanged herself while he was attached to umbilical cord

A newborn baby was miraculously rescued by police after his mum committed suicide while he was still attached by his umbilical cord.

She is believed to have hanged herself in a cowshed on Thursday morning.

The tragedy happened in Katni in Madhya Pradesh, where the baby was found dangling under the mum’s sari.

Police have named the woman as Laxmi Thakur, 36.

Officers noticed the baby under her sari after responding to an emergency call from her husband.

The youngster was rushed to hospital after a doctor detached the umbilical cord and gave first aid and is in a healthy condition at a state-run hospital.

Police officer Kavita Saini said: “When I reached the spot and examined the body, I found a baby dangling under her sari.

"We cleaned the baby, wrapped him in a blanket and waited for medical help to arrive.

The baby is healthy and we have moved him to a district hospital."
