A 17-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly stealing a car and then leading police on a long car and helicopter chase along two major freeways overnight.

The boy was charged with reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, theft of a motor vehicle and other driving offences.

Police say they spotted a red Toyota Orion sedan on St Kilda Road in Melbourne about 2.30am. The car was allegedly stolen from Hampton East on December 15.

After failing to stop the car, police then followed it along the Monash and West Gate freeways before deflating its tyres in Port Melbourne.

Police surrounded the car in Albert Park at 3.40am and arrested the sole occupant, a 17-year-old from Hampton East. He will appear in the children’s court on Monday.
