At least 95 people have been killed in a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in north-western China, the country’s state media reported on Tuesday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said that 86 people died in the province of Gansu and another nine in the neighbouring province of Qinghai in the quake, which occurred just before midnight on Monday.

More than 200 people were injured, Xinhua said, 96 in Gansu and 124 in Qinghai.

The quake struck in Gansu’s Jishishan county, about 5 kilometres from the provincial boundary with Qinghai.

The US Geological Survey put the quake’s magnitude at 5.9.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) had pegged the earthquake at a magnitude 6.1.

The quake was at a depth of 35 kilometres with its epicentre located 102 km west-southwest of Lanzhou, China, EMSC said.

The country’s national commission for disaster prevention, reduction and relief and Ministry of Emergency Management have activated a level-IV disaster relief emergency, Xinhua reported.

A work team has been dispatched to the affected areas to assess the impact of the disaster and to provide guidance for local relief operations, the report added.
