Gen Z have discovered The Beatles with a new generation of teenage fans being inspired by the Fab Four’s final song Now And Then.

Released yesterday to the exultation and excitement of millions of fans, the track has already featured in thousands of videos on TikTok.

The song has even kicked off a new trend where TikTokers compare pictures of them ‘now’ versus ‘then’, reflecting on their respective journeys over the years.

One shared a picture of how her hair had changed, with an image of her as a blonde ‘now’ compared to one of her as a brunette ‘then’.

Another appeared to be getting so emotional by the new song that she was almost crying.

Now And Then, written and sung by John Lennon and later developed by the other band members including George Harrison, has been finished by Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Ringo Starr decades after the original recording.

The track is sourced from a Lennon demo recorded in the late 1970s at his home in New York’s Dakota Building, using technology to extricate and isolate his voice.

Snippets of the track on the Beatles’ official TikTok page have over 4.5 million views, with comments from users including: ‘Never thought in my young life I would witness a song being released by the Beatles’ and ‘I’m crying this is so good’.

One TikToker described herself as feeling ‘lucky,’ adding ‘life is so wonderful and crazy sometimes’.

She said it was ‘surreal’ to her that The Beatles had released a tune and that she was listening to ‘John Lennon’s immortalised voice’ through AirPods.

Another said she was listening to the song on repeat.

Referencing George Harrison ‘s death, Sir Paul said of the song: ‘In 2001 we lost George, which took the wind out of our sails, it took almost a quarter of a century before we tackled Now And Then again’

43 years after John Lennon’s death – and more than two decades on from George Harrison’s passing – The Beatles have come together with the help of AI and audio tech pioneered by Lord of the Rings and Get Back director Sir Peter Jackson.

Now And Then, written and sung by John in 1977, features acoustic and electric guitar played by George in 1995.

Sir Paul McCartney completed the bass and Sir Ringo Starr recorded the drums in the last year.

The song was released on Thursday as a double A-side with the band’s 1962 debut single Love Me Do, and cover art by US artist Ed Ruscha.

Liam Gallagher even tweeted earlier: ‘Now n Then absolutely incredible biblical celestial heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time long live The Beatles LG x’.
