Girl, 16, has hair ripped from her scalp in horror go-kart engine accident

A teenage girl was left with horrific injuries after her hair got caught in a go-kart engine.

Matia Ruffin, 16, was traumatised after her braid became tangled in the vehicle's engine at the Fun Land amusement park in Fredericksburg, Virgina.

The girl was left stuck in the vehicle as paramedics rushed to free her.

Heart-stopping footage from the scene shows Matia wincing in pain with a large bald spot where the hair had been ripped from her scalp.

Speaking to 8News about the terrifying incident, Matia said: "I was thinking I was going to die. I thought it was my last time."

Matia's mum, Unique Coleman, said the family were enjoying the new go-kart race track when she heard her daughter's chilling screams.

She said: "My first instinct was I got to get her out of this go-kart.

"She was panicking and her legs were up in the air, um, her head was kind of leaned and tilted back."

Matia said it felt as though her hair was stuck in the go-kart's engine for around an hour before she was freed.

"It was horrible, it was scary, horrifying, it was bad."

Employees at the amusement park used knives and wire cutters to try and free her but it didn't work.

When paramedics arrived, they had to take the go-kart apart to free her from the vehicle.

They then used a harness to get her out and into the ambulance.

Her mum said she was so badly injured that "she had a blood clot where her scalp actually lifted from her skull".

Her shoulder length hair is now gone and Matia is afraid to return to school.

"It's completely bald, there's nothing there. I'm self-conscious, scared to show people. I'm stuck with it for life. I have nightmares about it. I think about it all the time," she said.

Fun Land's website says users with hair longer than shoulder length should secure it before using their rides.

Matia says she had tied her hair up but it came lose while on the go-kart.

Her mum said she didn't think the staff were equipped to deal with the situation.

Fun Land said they have safety policies in place for when incidents like this happen and nothing like this had happened before.
