A mother drowned after being swept away when she tried to rescue her dog from a fast-flowing river – after her husband desperately battled to reach her, an inquest heard.
Animal-lover Gail Theresa Lloyd, 50, went into the swollen River Clywedog near Felin Puleston, North Wales after taking her two dogs on a walk with her husband.
Mr Lloyd told police the dog had jumped into the water – and that Mrs Lloyd had entered it in an attempt to save her pet.
But she got into difficulty in a weir, at which point Mr Lloyd also entered the river to try and save her.
The inquest opening was told that other members of the public also assisted and managed to rescue Mr Lloyd using a rope.

But his wife, a project manager with a finance company, could not be saved.
The inquest heard Mrs Lloyd, of Wrexham, was pronounced dead by paramedics after being brought from the water at Erddig Park on the morning of December 9.
The hearing at County Hall in Ruthin heard early details of the river tragedy before the inquest was adjourned for a later date.
Senior coroner John Gittins told the hearing that Mrs Lloyd was pronounced dead at 10.15am.
Pathologist Dr Mark Atkinson gave a provisional cause of death as drowning.
The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
