Parents’ fury as children are forced to miss classes for a second day despite worst of Storm Ciaran passing

  • Some schools in the south opted to shut for a second day due to Storm Ciaran
  • Hundreds across England and Channel islands shut yesterday as storm raged

Furious parents hit out at school closures as a number shut their doors for a second day due to Storm Ciaran – despite a reduced weather warning.

The storm resulted in more than 300 schools in England closing their doors yesterday and returning to Covid-style remote learning.

Many were flooded or had lost access to running water, while others were closed as a precautionary measure amid concern over damage to buildings, falling trees and flying debris.

It came as gale force winds up to 104mph and torrential downpours battered the south of England and Channel Islands, with three possible tornadoes recorded.

Despite fears the extreme weather would last into the weekend, Storm Ciaran has slowed its course today.

Met Office forecasts show most of the storm had passed by Friday morning

Several schools have opted not to risk opening, with a number in Cornwall, Devon, Hampshire remaining shut – while the Government of Jersey announced a full ban until Monday.

But some parents have hit out at this decision, after it appeared much of the storm had now passed.

On Facebook, one parent wrote: ‘The schools will shut for anything these days but the parents get fined when they take them out.’

Another posted: ‘We wonder why the generations get progressively more of a liability in the real world.’

Meanwhile, a third added: ‘We live in Cornwall, weather like this is a regular occurrence. Seems to take less and less for schools to close these days.’

But not all parents saw the downside, with some poking fun at the drawback.

One said: ‘Obviously my kid’s safety is most important but for God’s sake Ciaran, did you have to come the day mine was due back after 12 months off!

Storm Ciaran chaos was likened to a ‘disaster movie’ yesterday as 104mph gales saw 127,000 UK homes lose power, schools shut, railways blocked and ferries axed.

Families were evacuated from holiday parks at Tenby in Wales and Burton Bradstock in Dorset amid flooding and LNER told train passengers to avoid travel until Sunday.

The Channel Islands were worst hit with dozens of homes on Jersey evacuated as a tornado blew through, trees were ripped up and huge hailstones smashed windows.

Roofs were torn off houses and trampolines were blown onto railway lines, with train operators urging commuters to work from home amid widespread disruption.
