Revealed: The 25 words we detest the most

Revealed: The 25 words we detest the most… But is YOUR most hated word on the list?

  • One in three rate ‘amazeballs’ as the word most likely to leave them seeing red
  • Over a quarter of Britons hate the phrase ‘nom nom’ – used when eating

If you’re tempted to talk about your ‘amazeballs holibobs’ – think again.

The words, apparently beloved by millennials, have been voted some of the most annoying in modern culture.

One in three (34 per cent) Britons rate ‘amazeballs’ as the word most likely to leave them seeing red. While 29 per cent said they could not stand the use of ‘holibobs’ to refer to holidays.

Over a quarter said they loathed the phrase ‘nom nom nom’ – commonly used to express pleasure at the thought of eating.

Also making the shortlist were ‘fur baby’ (a millennial term for pet), ‘totes’ (as in totally) and ‘bae’ (term of endearment, an acronym of before anyone else).

And if you are trying to woo someone, its best to avoid the terms ‘hanky-panky’ or ‘nookie’ as they are all likely to put a potential partner off.

The survey of 2,000 Britons, carried out by research agency Perspectus Global, found that one in four have sighed in disappointment when they have heard someone using a cringeworthy word.

A fifth (17 per cent) admitted their opinion of the person goes down as a result.

Neuroscientist Dr Rachel Taylor said: ‘If someone uses a word or phrase that we find embarrassing, as humans, we instinctively want to distance ourselves from them – hence the cringe, which can be seen as physically making ourselves smaller.

‘Our primitive brain cannot distinguish between a physical or psychological threat, and any awkward behaviour from others can trigger a threat response.’

She added: ‘Obviously the words that we find embarrassing are not objective, they are culturally specific.

‘Our reactions are learned and have been created by our experiences from birth until now.

‘Our judgment is environmental, yet the response is caused by an interaction with current status and learned behaviour.

‘The brain combines it all and proposes a precision of what the word means, and then we experience an emotion.’
